  • percussion with Sibelius

I have read forums, read the manual for optimizing sibelius, I am not a dumb guy, This has been one of the most complex, and frustrating experiences learning to use the the vienna library with Sibelius. Just the Sibelius mixer alone, cannot be left alone as recommended, it constantly needs to be adjusted, and frequently will screw up the channels on its own. OK, but for now, just one question, I have the special edition, complete suite, Sibelius 7.5 I am using the instrument pro player, so lets say I have loaded a percussion patch for instrument 3, wanting to write for a castanet..... in this case, midi slot 3, on the virtual keyboard, starting on C4, I can get the castanet sounds I am looking for, with a nice repeating pattern, varying as you go up the scale. How do I write that in the Sibelius score, if I write the rhythm, for instance two 32's to and eighth, it sounds stale, stodgy, stiff, How do I get the nice repeated sound that I can get on the virtual keyboard. I have a million more questions, but let me just start with that. thanks john

  • Hello John!

If you have tried to make output or channel settings in the Sibelius mixer, I recommend reseting all outputs to (Auto). As you have found out yourself making settings there will only screw up the playback.

Here is how you get the Castanet sounds.
    - Use the "Vienna Symphonic Library" House Style
    - Use the Sibelius instrument "Castanets"
    - Use the Special Edition or Special Edition PLUS sound set and apply the program "Percussion" to one channel.
    - In Vienna Ensemble load the matrix "14S Percussion" in an instrument with the same channel number.

By default the standard sample (C4) will be triggered. In order to trigger the right hand sample (D4), wright "R" above the note. To switch back wright "L" or "ord." To trigger the roll (C#4) use the 8 tremolos (or 16 or 32 tremolos) symbol.

If you also want to trigger the upbeats (E4 to B4) with Sibelius, you will have to use a Percussion [5 lines] staff as described in the "Optimzing Sibelius Playback" manual, page 9.

    Best regards,
    Andi
