  • Bow change in Solo Strings using Performance Detache and Performance Legato.

As I was creating a solo string piece, I want to go over some things I did which may not be the recommended way of doing things. I basically used heavily performance detache with areas having performance legato. Most of the time peformance detache was used for bow changing, which I continued with performance legato on subsequent notes (for about 3 or 4). Is this recommended, using performance detache for bow changes? Also, my velocities are on the mid range. Generally I am satisfied, but some things seem off. Any suggestions of what to be careful and how to improve will be appreciated! Thank you!

  • My approach is constantly evolving, but lately for detailed bow changing I've been using the sequencer in VIPro to access the performance repetitions (both regular and dynamic.)  I've created custom patches to create the exact bowing effect I'm looking for and then keyswitch between them.  The reason I use the sequencer, in case it's not clear, is so I can combine the exact repetions I'm looking for.  Odd numbered repetitions are down bows, and even numbers are up bows.  Repetition 1 starts a phrase and repetition 9 ends it.  So far for me this has been my most effective way of shaping phrases in a natural and musical way.

  •  Very interesting approach! Thanks for sharing! Which repetition patches do you use? perf legato? I tend to like the bow change sound in performance detache which is why I put it in front of my legato. Will attempt different things now. [:)]
