  • Divisi, Dimension Strings and Sibelius

    Hello Andi,

I'm wondering what the best way is for writing simple divisi within a single string section?

I tried writing two parts using Sibelius voice 1 and voice 2 on a single stave. The top line was intended to be legato; the lower line pizzicato. I wrote 'a4' on the stave having loaded the DS violins 'All preset'. But the pizzicato affected both voices, so I'm doing something wrong.

I understand that you could write two staves and assign the preset players 1-4 to the top stave and 5-8 to the lower and then have different articulations playing - but this isn't how a string score would be laid out and it complicates things.

Do I need to do something else to make the two voices to a single stave work as divisi with Dimension strings?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Oceanview!

It's not possible with Sibelius to have two voices of one staff playing on two different channels. So you can only play one articulation on one staff at a time.

If you want two voices to play two different articulations, you will have to use two different staves and assign two channels for this instrument on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page and in Vienna Ensemble (Pro). By the way. I don't think that it's unusal to have two staves for a divisi section in a score. Anyway, I agree that it would be nice, if Sibelius would offer the possibility to have two voices of one staff playing on two different channels.

    Best regards,
    Andi
