  • Patches vs Maatrix

He Folks, Hope someone can lend some good advice here... I'm an Overture 4 user on the verge of purchasing Special Edition Vol 1. I've worked with GPO (Garritan) for years. For different articulations I just load each patch (for instance Vns 1 Legato, Vns 1 Pizz, etc) as a separate voice on a staff, with it's own midi channel. When needing to switch articulations I just enter notes under that respective voice. I've read that when you load, for instance, 1st Violins from SE it loads (automatically) with all the included articulations- as one patch??? So it's automatically loaded as a keyswitching instrument? Can I load each articulation separately as its own "patch" so I can continue to use the method I am using or am I stuck with having to work with keyswitching, matrixes, whatever....? Thanks in advance! Pete

  • If you want to have one articulation per instance, you will have to load separate instances of VI. Or load them in Vienna Ensemble. Obviously you will be limited to 16 articulations per instrument this way though. You don't have to load any of the Presets, so whoever told you that was wrong.

I don't know how Overture works, so I don't know what the best way for you will be.

  • Bill, Thanks. I may not have stated my question clearly enough. I don't want to just have one articulation per instance, I want to have 5 or 6. Let's say I have all my strings in one instance, but several patches (articulations) for Vn I, Vn II, Viola, etc... up to 16 of course. In the past, with Garritan, each articulation was a separate patch, and I would load each of these patches into one instance of GPO, and in the notation software assign each patch to a different voice on that staff. Can that be done in Vienna? Are there actually different patches for each articulation that can be loaded into an instrument rack, or are you forced to load 1 violin patch (for example) and use keyswitching to accomplish this? Remember that I am not loading these into a DAW. thanks, Pete

  • The VI player is not multitimberal, so only receives on one MIDI channel. It's only by hosting it in Venna Ensemble that you get 16 channels going to one VST object. You also need VE to host samples in your 64bit address space, which Ove can't do by itself.

Yes, there are different patches for everything, and the VI player is totaly flexible as to how you set them up.

  • Aha! Very valuable information! So my "entry" level SE Vol 1 just got more expensive- because I definitely need multi-timbral Thanks again- there is zero info on using their products with Overture 4 on their site.

  • No, VE and the VI player are both included in your purchase. There are pro versions of both, but they are not required.
