  • Hi Andi, I trust there will soon be a sound set update for the full DBs?

  • Hi Bill!

The sound set is already prepared for the Dimension Basses and doesn't have to be updated. The necessary VI and VI Pro presets for the Basses will come with the next VSL Soundset Installer update. Soon... [;)]

  • Hello Andi,

At long last I now have the Dimension Strings loaded from the Vienna Hard Drive and am experimenting with them.

I notice that the VIPro preset for Sibelius (DS violins) is about 3560MB in size with 24 articulations enabled when it loads. If I can reduce these articulations further I can see that I might be able to create a limited DS template from these presets that might allow me to load a full string section for composing purposes (my RAM is 16GB).

I have tried disabling a few of the 24 cells in this preset down to 17 and saved it. When I reload this altered preset the cells I disabled are still disabled but the RAM size remains 3560 approx. I don't understand what is going on here. Also, disabling cells doesn't cause the RAM figure to drop - is this because it would have to re-calculate the RAM each time? Is there a command for doing this?

Can I load the Sibelius preset for the DS violins and have all the cells disabled? Then I can enable cell by cell.

If I can reduce the size of each string section to about 2500MB it should work.

Also, what is VSL's current suggestion for creating a violin 2 section within the DS Sibelius presets?

    Many thanks

P.S. You know of course that the black monolith the apes encounter in 2001 A Space Odyssey was really the archetype for the Vienna Hard Drive .... (joke) [:)]

  • Hi Oceanview!

The Dimension Strings "All" and "Group" VI Presets for Sibelius include several matrices. So if you disable one cell in the first matrix, the disabled patches will remain enabled in other matrices. That's why the loaded samples and used RAM didn't drop.

If you don't change the number of players AND don't use the auto divisi (Voice) function, you could remove all matrices except the first one. Then you should see the used RAM drop after disabling cells.

My suggestion for a Violin 2 section with the Dimension Strings would simply be using different articulations or the same articulations on different strings. One could play sul G, while the other one plays sul D; one with vibrato, the other one without...

    Andi

  • Hello Andi,

Thanks for your thoughts. I've found that if I load a Dimension preset, the global 'disable cells' button sends the RAM to zero. I can then save the Preset in that form (empty) or enable cells one by one to assess how the RAM goes up.

I hit a problem with the Dimension basses - the Sibelius VIPro preset seems to be mostly empty apart from a line of red staccato cells with lines drawn through them - does this mean VSL haven't yet issued this preset? Is it on the list of things to do?

Also, I notice that the text command in VE Strings 'short' which is supposed to trigger the short detache in DS doesn't work for me. I checked the Playback Dictionary in Sibelius and 'short' is linked to a soundID called +short rather than +detache. Is that right or does it need changing?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Oceanview!

In order to trigger the Detache short articulation of the Dimension Strings, please use the Technique Text command "detache". I will add the Sound ID "short" for the Dimension Strings with the next update. Then you can also use "short". Don't change it in the Playback Dictionary.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi. Your continuing support is much appreciated.

  • Hello Andi,

I've installed the new soundset / house style and loaded the DS basses preset for Sibelius. I notice that cells 1,3,9 and 10 are red (sta, sVi, trm, piz) - is this correct?

I also notice that in the Sib presets for DS viola, cello, bass there is no naming of the cells 'sul G' etc after the first two rows as there was with the violins. I know it would be sul C, sul G, sul D, sul A for viola and cello and E A D G for the basses. Could you explain why this is? This refers to the first greyed out cell after the first two rows of 12.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Oceanview!

    Which OS are you using?
Please notice that for our latest software versions Mac OS 10.8 or higher is needed on Mac. If you use an older Mac OS version, this might be the reason that some cells appear in red. You can try to replace the red cells manually with the according patches from the patch list.

If the name "sul G" (etc.) appears in the cell names or not, has no relevance for the switches. I must admit that I simply forgot to name the cells manually this time. ;-) If you click on a cell, you can see the patch name including the information on which String it is played in the Advanced view. For example "..._E_..." means that it is played on the E-String.

    Best,
    Andi
