  • Studio upgrade

Hello all, I haven’t posted here in probably over 5 years. I originally purchased The Symphonic Cube and the Performance Set when they were a new release. Since then I got some great use of it but my orchestral writing went on hiatus for a while. I am getting back to it now and have discovered I am far out of date. My sounds are fine (for now) but the software it runs on is now obsolete! Gigastudio seems like a thing of the past now and my library is in .gig. I was told players such as Kontakt can convert them all which is hopefull.. except of course the Performace Set software! I believe it was written for use with Gigastudio exclusively.

Can someone more in the recent loop help me understand what my options are? My goal is to have everything on one computer Cubase and –insert best sample player program-. It would be nice to be able to load VSL with other libraries into one sampler.

    Thanks

    Aaron

  • Welcome back into orchestral writing,

The VSL libraries now runs exclusively in Vienna Instruments and Vienna Instruments Pro. It's the best sample player I ever used, performance wise and have great keyswitching capabilities. Vienna Instruments is free with any VSL library, the pro version have more options and have to be purchased separatly. See the products comparison here http://www.vsl.co.at/en/211/497/537/1456/2452/2109.htm

VI is not a full fledge sampler like kontakt, it will not read third party libraries.

Vienna Instrument is not a multi-timbral instrument so you need to run separate instance for each instruments. Vienna Ensemble is a Multi-Timbral instrument and is more than that.

To run multiple instance of Vienna Instruments you need Vienna Ensemble wich is free. If you want to run third party instruments like Kontakt side by side with Vienna Instruments you should check at Vienna Ensemble Pro.

And i can run more instruments (VI, Kontakt...) when using Vienna Ensemble Pro than using regular instruments tracks in Cubase.

I think your answer is Vienna Ensemble Pro (with VI and kontakt inside...)

  • Thank you for your quick and helpful reply Fred. I just looked at the Vienna software, looks great actually! Just a couple of follow up questions that I didn't see addressed on the webpage...

Does Vienna Instruments or Ensemble work properly with the original Cube and Performance Sets? Will it recognize all the file names/types? They’re in .gig. If so, does it have to convert all of the files or is it simply able to run a gig file?

Keeping in mind that getting the Pro versions allows you to also run third party samples. Out of curiosity - Is it possible to run the free Vienna Instruments and/or Ensemble as VST as well as opening, (for example) Kontakt as another simultaneous VST in Cubase to run other samples? Or does that create conflicts and too much load on the processor/RAM?

    Hello ABales,

I´m afraid the First Edition GS from 2003 only works with GigaStudio, it was designed exclusively for this sample player.

Unfortunately the upgrade paths from our legacy collections expired years ago, but within the product cycle, the prices of our Vienna Instruments Collections are now much lower than they would have been with the upgrade discounts back then.

If you´re interested in working with the new VI Collections, the best idea is to check out our Special Editions. They come with a whole lot of instruments, and in combination with the Vienna Instruments (PRO) sample player, these collections are VERY powerful.

Here are a few videos that features the Special Editions.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Thanks for the help guys. I was more out of date than I even thought. How does one have time and money to stay current?

  • Some of it can be converted to Kontakt, but all the Performance stuff can't, so that will be of no use to you. Having said that, the newer VI Player is so much more powerful than what you already have, I would recommend checking out the videos so that you can see what you have been missing all these years.

  • And you can load your .gig in G-Player. http://www.soundlib.com/gplayer/

  • Thanks for the link Fred. The G-Player does look like my best option to continue using my .gig VSL. I do have a question that I emailed G-Player but they have yet to respond.

If I am running Cubase64bit with G-Player VST 64bit. Can I still utilise the original Performance Tool software from Vienna? Does it work running along 64bit software or even with G-Player regardless?

    Thanks

  • Here is some info from http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/p/23900/170609.aspx

There is no built in performance tool but you can still use the VSL performance tool with G-Player. The VSL performance tool is a standalone application that processes the MIDI notes and send the MIDI results to a player such as Gigastudio or G-Player.

But I think you'll need to run G-Player like an external midi instrument (Not as VST) so you'll need a virtual midi port (Like LoopBe). And you'll have to figure a way to route the G-Player audio signal back to cubase. Seems a bit complex to setup.

    Found this tutorial by googling:
