  • Making a final mix in VE...Limitation, internal Freeze idea

    Hello,

A commun problem when working (exclusively) inside Vienna Ensemble is that when producing a final mix, there’s no easy way to transform midi (virtual instruments) channels into audio channels in order to save CPU processing and adding more plugins.

When mixing in a DAW, I like to deal with audio files or freezed tracks only. In most DAW it’s easy to just freeze a single instruments and continue to add FX and Sends to those freezed tracks.

This is impossible when working in one big VE instance. I know I could bounce stems or use VE individual outputs, but I like to keep everything in VE in order to easily tweak MIR and other plugins without complex routing between VE and my DAW.

So I would like to share an idea that I think could be implemented in a future version of Vienna Ensemble.

The goal here is not to turn Vienna ensemble into a DAW in itself but to help acheiving a more complex mix that otherwise would be impossible to deal with commun computers without bouncing all tracks to audio.

    VE internal freeze concept:

This is nothing new because it would not be so different than the freeze function found in Logic and Cubase but would operate inside VE and works with individual channels.

    How I see it:

-Enable freeze on one or multiple Virtual instrument Channel

-Press play on your DAW. VE would now record the sound from the VI in realtime.

-The audio file will be stored in a cache folder previously set in the preferences.

-After the freezing pass, VE would use the audio file and ignore the midi data coming from the DAW.

The audio playback would stay in sync with the DAW. I don’t know how complex this is to implement but Melodyne already do something similar (be in sync with DAW)

-You can now start adding many more FX plugins.

Of course I don't expect this to be implement someday, I just hope you like the idea.

  • An interesting idea, but it would mean to develop a full-blown hard-disk recorder which would have to work in the background. 8-)
