  • Dimension Strings in alternative pop/folk context

    Hi,

Just thought some of you might be interested to hear how I used Dimension Strings in my work - at the time I produced this only the cellos and violins were out, also I don't have VI Pro so this is done with the basic VI.

The song is called 'The Magic Mountain' and the strings come in first at around 1minute, then again at 1:50, and they sort of take over in the coda at the end. You can hear it at https://soundcloud.com/owenduff/the-magic-mountain

Hope you enjoy, would be interested in any feedback on the arrangment.

    Owen

  • That's a very coherent and wonderfully quirky song - congratulations, Owen. The overall production is really great, and I like the arrangement, too. My only criticism would concern the sound of the main vocals (from a technical POV, not the way they are performed). It's slightly harsh and a bit "small", especially in comparison to the fat, warm (and courageously compressed ;-) ...) playback. Some de-crackling (actually "de-smacking") and de-essing might help - if I'm allowed to say so. :-)

    Kind regards,

  • PS: Dimension Strings fit the task perfectly. :-)

  • Loved everything about it.

  • Thanks for the responses, glad you liked the song Stephen... Thanks also for the constructive feedback Dietz, I do find mixing a good vocal sound challenging at times, this one does have quite heavy de essing already, maybe my compression skills are at fault, I do feel that's a sort of weak area for me, or possibly it's my micing technique. Anyway, thanks again for listening.
