How does VSL compare to other orchestral sample libraries?

I ask this with regards to making movie sound tracks. I am just getting started learning how to make movie sound tracks. I am aware that for big budget movies it is always best to use live players, especially for solo instruments like an expressive violin solo.

But I will be composing and recording the music for very low budget films (for the time being at least) and so I am in the market for a top notch orchestral library. I use Logic Audio Platinum on a dual processor G4 Mac. I have heard this sample library through headphones at music stores, and I have downloaded the sample tracks and listened to them through headphones. But I have no idea how this library would hold up through cinema speakers, cranked up, and in front of a real live audience.

Is the VSL a "real" professional sample library or is it like many things in the audio industry... i.e. "If it claims to be 'professional', then it usually isn't!"?

Would Hans Zimmer use this library for a film, or John Williams? Of course not in place of a live orchestra, but for writting purposes.

  • Some "Big name" film composers owns our library in the meantime.
With some of them I'm in contact, and they defenitely plan to produce their final scores using the Vienna Symphonic Library.

    best wishes

  • didn´t I see a photo of Mr.Zimmer buying VSL at the NAMM pics? (and speaking with a genius? *wink, wink*)

I like his black shirt. Bet it´s pretty expensive. [[;)]]

I like how Hans Zimmer seems to be 100% aware of the music technology edge. One would think it might be a bit easy to get lost when you´re "up there". I think he´s a great example to those of us who got into music playing an electric guitar in our room and recording in a poor 4-track recorder. I´ll stop this senseless rambling right now and blah,blah...
