  • VSL works, Nuendo works, Sibelius has a day off...

    Hello everyone,

i'm not the most frequent of visitors here, but time is short.. and there's just too much to do...
And, with that in mind, it is very frustrating that I hardly get around to compose these days, mostly because of software problems.

    THE SITUATION:
I work with Nuendo 6 (64bit) as a master mixer application. Here, I record bits and pieces, load instruments that cannot be loaded into Sibelius, as well as my own samples.

    I use Sibelius (7.5 64 bit) as a ReWire-Slave.
Here I make my composition and send all data to Nuendo to record and send further to the sample players.

I also use Vienna Ensemble (64bit) from Vienna Symhonic Library.

In order to use Sibelius as a ReWire app I updated from version 6 just a few days ago.
Nuendo does see the Sibelius 7.5 ReWire app.

    THE PROBLEM:
Yesterday everything worked: I was able to hit PLAY in Nuendo and Sibelius responded by playing along. This way I could record one instrument to wave, and reload the sample player to free up memory on my notebook, and record another piece.

Today, Sibelius won't start up in ReWire. First it gave me a warning message that the engine failed and I needed to Clean Up, altough the ReWire logo on the Transport-panel did show up.
Alas, I went to the Audio Engine Options and pressed the clean up button, clicked OK when an windows pop-up screen asked if Sibelius could perform its task, and then restarted Sibelius.

    No ReWire.
Since then it seems impossible to get it back to work. Sibelius automatically turned on the "Use Virtual Instruments", thus greying out the ReWire buttons below.
When I uncheck "Use Virtual Instruments" and reboot Sibelius, the ReWire buttons do show up... but nothing happens when I press either of them.

Several attempts of trying to Repair or Clean Up, as well rebooting the entire notebook, have not showed any improvement or results.

    What is going on here?
I did not upgrade to get this sort of problems, spending almost 3 days to set up and not being able to play a single note.

PC= notebook, from Asus, with Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz, 6 GB of installed memory (not much, I know, but have to wait until I don't need the notebook long enough for the shop to install more memory), using 64bit Windows 7 SP1.

Any help, tip or advice is much appreciated!
    Many thanks,

  • Hello weslldeckers!

Make sure that you start Nuendo first. Then turn on the Sibelius ReWire channels in the Devices menu. Sibelius has to be started after that.

If this doesn't help, I would ask the Steinberg or Sibelius support for help.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi,

thank you for the suggestion. Indeed, I startup Nuendo first.
On my other computer (a desktop instead of notebook) the whole installation/upgrade thing went smoothly and ReWire worked the first time round! I was so exited that I forgot to uncheck the many input devices that Sibelius had kindly selected for me. When I input a note, the whole thing went looping out and back into Sibelius causing it to have a breakdown (freeze).

After shutting down Sibelius via TaskManager, ReWire was lost and since then I cannot reinstate it, no matter what I do.

I will contact Sibelius support, since the problem appears to be in that application rather than in Nuendo. Strange though, that now Sibelius has become part of Avid, one can only contact the Technical Support team for a 90 day period. Why is that?
