Film Short Piece

Hello all, I've been reading this board for a while, and would apprecieate any advice, because I love to learn, and you guys know quite a bit.

I wrote this piece for practice on a short film, "Geweldenaren Van Ver", and it's a great film short which I would recommend checking out regardless of listening to my piece. [[:|]]

The piece is entitled "Geweldenaren", and it was written with Opus 1 and some symphony of voices samples at the end.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The piece starts off very dry actually. Is that the way you wanted it? The instruments are having difficulty blending at the beginning, maybe because of this reason. Which reverb do you like to use?

It gets stronger as it goes along. There's almost a Japanese influence at one point. The SOV helps the blending effect I mentioned, especially towards the end.

Actually, it starts off way too dry, you're right. Initially, the first scene takes place in a room, so I wanted it to be a bit drier, but the instruments really aren't blending at all.

I usually use the Lexicon Pantheon LE that comes with Sonar and the Waves Trueverb and Rverb. I edited the track and put in some more reverb.

I also wonder if they're not blending too well because the orchestration's not so hot though? Would you change anything?

I'm not sure the Japanese influence is a good thing though, considering the film is Dutch. [*-)]

Well, I think orchestration is just a matter of practice. The more you do, the better you will become. I'm sure of it. If the piece works with the film, then that's the main issue really.

I am writing something at the moment, and it sounds just terrible. You can fix so much with the elements of mixing and reverb etc. but in the end, the orchestration is the main thing I would say. Get that mostly right, and the music is generally listenable instantly without any mixing.
