  • Variations by on a theme by Ludwig van Beethoven by Guy Bacos

I haven't posted demos for a while, but have been very busy doing demos, but for a delayed release. I've been writing piano music in between as well, this is one piece I finished a few months ago I'd like to share with you.

This version is realized on the Vienna Imperial, however, it will get its live premiere by pianist Hyejin Pak in Cincinnati, October 8, 2014.

This work has been dedicated to Herbert Tucmandl

  • Congratulations yet again! Great imagination at times - I hope the pianist will still have skin on their fingers after those glissandi... I prefer the second half of the piece (the first is too reminiscent of the Christmas Bacos, but I suppose that is the stamp of originality, the 'Confection Bacos'), but overall a great addition to the repertoire (Herb should feel highly complimented). Some hopeful composters around should hear this work as an introduction to real music writing and what real music sounds like, as opposed to their infatuation with HZ crap.

I stopped to think, and I am not aware of (or I have forgotten) any other variations on this theme....

  • Thanks Errikos!

lol, I loved this: "the Christmas Guy Bacos".

Yes, the quadruple glissandi is cruel, I know, but I think dooable, while some concert pianists said it's not possible, a few has admited it's playable, just not comfortable. To add some humor into this, since it seems it has never been done before, it could go in the Guinness book of records. :)))

Yes, I believe Beethoven wrote some variations to this theme until he finally got it right at the end. ;)

    Indeed... [H]

I heard it again, I was a bit unfair before. It's much less than half the piece that is 'Jingle Bells', and the original theme lends itself very much to that kind of melodic treatment anyway. Very well done! I might do a set of my own one day...

P.S.: Favourite passage - Variation 6 (bars 26-37, lovely touch finishing the passage on the F# as well).

P.S.2: Why don't you name some of these variations for obvious influences? Say, Messiaen, Debussy, Liszt, Ginastera, etc. I am not being disrespectful of course, I was thinking it would make for a nice hommage to all those greats who failed to think of writing this piece...

  • Joining the compliments and seconding Errikos' remarks on how refreshing is to hear real music from time to time... And I also think your realization of the variations is a grand compliment to a stellar instrument that the Vienna Imperial is.

Question: Is your Christmas Charols piano piece available for purchase somewhere? I have always enjoyed listening to it on youtube from time to time, but I would like to get a CD version of it (if available).

    Best,

    Goran

  • I'm really impressed with such a rich piece of music. Rich in imagination, in technique, in harmony, in styles... Congratulations, Guy, this is an absolute masterpiece for piano masterclasses!
