    Here is another of my annoying theoretical questions addressed to VSL recording experts.  I know that Dimension Strings are totally different from Solo, and are in general designed to use as an ensemble.  I would never use them as solo instruments. 

    However --- is the TIMBRE of each Dimension player recorded with a different EQ or recording characteristics than would be used on a solo instrument?  In other words is the timbre of an individual Dimension player actually incorrect according to VSL recording philosophy if heard separately?  And so in effect these instruments MUST be used together, because of the timbral changes that occur when they go together in ensemble?  I am asking this in reference to purely recording acoustics, NOT playing style, humanize, etc.

    Is this not a comprehensible question?  I really would like to know if the recording concept of these samples is to have different frequency characteristics and timbre based on the presumed use in an ensemble, as opposed to the Solo strings.

    Dear William,

    (... I'm not sure that I understood your question correctly ...) The main difference between a typical VSL solo instrument recording and the Dimension instruments is that the former are recorded in full stereo, the latter in multi-mono setups. Other than that the technical prerequesites were similar (respectively pretty much the same).

    Thanks Dietz, I didn't phrase that very well but that was what I was wondering about.  If there were different microphones used than solo strings, or different EQ/post production to adjust them timbrally for later use in ensembles.

    Well, obviously different concepts ask for different individual solutions, but in principle, the same (high) criteria had to be met by the recording crew and the editing engineers.

    I'm not sure that the very details are something that VSL will display publicly any time soon, though .... ;-D ... thanks for your understanding.
