    What I didn't understand is what they mean by convolution processing that doesn't require conversion to the frequency domain. I thought that was what an impulse response does?

    Perfect convolution is a purely time-domained and therefore terribly DSP-consuming process. They found ways to do it partly in the frequency domain which however is only a compromise.
