    Hi,

    Does anyone happen to know what the battute violin technique exactly is, if there is an vsl articulation for it or what are other ways to simulate it?

    Hi, 

    The full term is "Col legno battuto".  The strings are hit with (mostly) the wooden side of the bow.  Lots of VSL libs have it, look for Col Legno. The Col legno tratto (or arco) is less common, but can be found in the Ircam solo instruments e.g.

    Whilst it can be done col legno, it doesn't have to be. One just hits the string in the upper half of the bow.

    You're right, of course. It's just that it's so often taken in the same breath as col legno... I have a whole book somewhere about string articulations :)

    Thanks for your clarifications. My book on orchestration solely explains the col legno one, but in terms of sound I do not think it is the one. Also I understand these are quite modern techniques(?), and the reference I have is start 19th century.

    I'll try and see where I can bring this with the other articulations.
