  • Which VSL Strings can do this?

I am looking for string samples that sound close to this http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00020HBUK/qid=1097600161/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/102-5283380-1136912?v=glance&s=music&n=507846 (Track 14. Souls of the Women Rest for a Moment, And Thereafter...)

I was suggested it sounds like a small string group of perhaps 2,2,1,1 or 4,2,2,1. I was wondering if you guys thought VSL Chamber Strings or Solo Strings would be the way to go.

If the answer is solo strings - how hard is it to get this kind of blending sound. I have Dan Dean solo strings and even layering them to create a larger string set sounds harsh and lacks that string blending effect that ensembles have - but I'm not sure.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Actually I have other examples that might be helpful for the kind of string (or even full orchestra) size/style I'm looking for

    Thanks.

  • One thing to consider, though you probably already know it: trying to layer the SAME patches (you mentioned DD solo strings) doesn't work. If you have different but compatible articulations in the set of strings, that's fine; but you get phase problems (harshness, variable loudness) when you try to put multiple copies of the same recording together. Thanks for the second set of links, since I couldn't get the amazon.com reference earlier.

  • Thank you - yes I did know that. I have a problem with DD solo because it has no legato or sustain samples.

That is why I am interested in VSL right now - but I don't know yet if chamber, or solo strings is the better option for what I am looking for.

  • Hi,
In my opinion, there is no way to have such beautifull legato with anything ...
This is a real musical phrase and feelings.
The VSL can be very closed too but ...

  • Thank you for the advice.

I've been listening to as many of the solo and chamber demos that I can find. I am still undecided...

Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions on what might sound closest to this - VSL chamber string or solo strings?

VSL chamber strings is the closest

  • Dear PD,

Sorry, I didn't listen to the examples you posted, but as an owner of the Complete Orchestral Package PE, and Chamber Strings, I'll tell you that both the Solo strings (two of which are included in the COP PE) and Chamber strings are delightful. The solo strings definitely don't blend as well as the Chamber strings sound on their own. The chamber strings are small groups and work great for such.

Also, if you haven't heard the demos on the ilio webiste, there are more there. Warning though, these don't do the libraries justice.

    best,
    Nick

  • Thanks for the advice everyone. [:)]

Also thanks for the tip on the ilio site. I will check that out.
