  • VEP 5 Slave Computer Freezes over Network

Hello, I'm new to the forums, and am trying VEP 5 over ethernet for the first time. I just purchased a new 2013 Mac Mini to be used as a slave along with my iMac as the master. The Master is running 10.8 (mountain lion) and the Mac Mini is running 10.9 (Mavericks - no choice as that's what it shipped with). I have the 2 computers networked properly over Ethernet, and controlled using Apple Remote Desktop. I am also running Logic Pro X (though I have tried this as well on Logic Pro 9 and the problem exists there too.) Inside Logic, I can see the VEP 5 instances on both my master and slave computer. Once connected to both computers, everything works normally. After less than 10 minutes of use, I notice a ramp up to 100% CPU in Vienna, and the slave locks up completely, and I lose the connection over the network. This even happens when using one instrument on the slave, so it's not a matter of the slave getting overwhelmed. I have checked all the forums for Vienna, Logic and Kontakt and have not seen this specific issue.

Vienna on both machines are on the same version, and my audio/MIDI settings are identical My specs are as follows.

    Imac:

    3.4ghz quad core i7

    32GB ram

    768GB SSD

    Mac Mini

    2.6ghz quad core i7

    16GB ram

    256GB SSD

Through the process of elimination, I have ruled out it being a problem with the computers, Logic, Kontakt or the Instrument Libraries. The crash only happens when Vienna is running and connected to the other computer. It does not occur if Vienna is running only on the slave Mac Mini and not connected to the iMac over the network. Unfortunately I have run out of options and would love any insight you all may have on resolving this issue. Thanks so much!

  • welcome Brenton87,

you didn't mention but it appears a switch is involved in your network connection (iMac and mini not connected directly with a cable) - right?

so there should be some lights on your switch indicating network traffic on the various ports - do some of them *lock up* when the loosing connection event happens and do you also loose the ARD connection?

check network cable(s) or change the one which cases a lock-up if available.

btw: if applicable - which switch model is involved?

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
