  • VSL INSTRUMENTS DOUBLING-VELOCITIES STICKING?

    RUNNING:WIN 7, i7, CUBASE 7.5, ENS PRO 5, INSTRUMENTS PRO 2, KONTAKT 5, RME 400, 96 GB

I know from experience that the following is probably a problem I've created, but I have come to a wall with this and write this in hopes that someone will have some idea (s) as to a way to correct the performance of many of my VSL libraries. I'm going to send this out to both forum and support in hopes someone will have some idea about what's wrong here.
First I have to advise  that for whatever reason several download attempts have now failed to install the latest Ensemble Pro 5 to function in my system. I run with the earlier version. Cubase lists the newest version of Ens Pro 5 as an "unavailable parameter" whenever I attempt opening it. I sent some screen shote to VSL support about 2 months ago and Paul sent me another link to the latest EP5 download, which once again did not install in my system. So I continue with the earlier version. However the following happens whether or not I run VSL  instruments through EP 5 or simply through Instruments Pro 2

My Special Ed Solo Flute, PFL, Bass Clar instruments sound as if velocity layers are sticking as I play, sound as if they're dbling notes. They sound like when a multi velocity instrument is built in Kontakt and the velocity layers are completely overlapped, causing all the velocity layers to play simultaneously.
Its like playing Ensemble instruments that have a phasing effect to their sound.
The degree of this varies from project to project.
As an example, last nite I ran a new project test and the Spec Ed. S Flt. was just fine, this morning on another new test  the SE Solo Flute doubled notes from d3 to e4 and b4 to g5. This morning (once again) the entire PFL range sounds doubled.

If my memories correct, I did not have this problem until Instruments Pro 2.
I have now had this problem across two computers, from Cubase 7 to Cubase 7.5 , using a CME UF8, an MAudio ES 88 and a Novation Impulse. The Novation is what I'm currently using for fader assignments.

And currently for me, with Expression assigned to any fader ALL of my VSL instruments display this doubling up effect between 65 to approx 90 (depending upon the instrument).
Also, bringing a new VSL instrument  into an existing Cubase Project creates this problem.
With Humanize on this "doubling" is most pronounced, but it is still clearly evident with Human disabled.
I've tried myriads of  confiqurations  in the "Edit"- Pre Release, Release functions, disabled the Release samples, trying varying confiqurations with all of  the Advanced tab Start Offset etc parameters, tried with & without verb-eq.
It happens with and without Expression or slot crossfades assigned.
Nothing I can fiqure out fixes this for me.
And in addition to and concurrent with the above, in many of the Brass Single Instruments I've bought, Trp-C,  Bb Trp, Bass Trp , their is a fluffed dbling kind of effect, but with these instruments the "fluff" takes place only on the initial attacks.Again, I can not create a workable solution using any of the Edit, Advanced etc. tools available in the player.

I have not  experienced this with any other library or sampler, except, again, when I've loaded and overlapped samples in Kontakt, which is what leads me to the Velocity overlap idea.
VSL is amongst the cream of libraries but every time I go back to try again to try to use what I consider one of the strenghts of my template I run into this. But I've not seen this issue in either the VSL or VI-CONTROL forums. That's why I'm pretty sure this ones on me, but darned if I can fiqure it out.
I can't  pass this off to Cubase or Keyboard issues, as there have been to many computers, reinstalls, Cubase versions and types of controllers involved now.
But the VSL libraries in my system are currently unreliable and unusable and its making me sick!
Can anyone offer some ideas what I can do to straighten this out?

  • Hello Garr!

This is an unusual problem indeed. One simple possible reason comes to me immediately. You have mentioned all kinds of things you have tried, but didn't mention Velocity X-Fade. With Velocity X-Fade turned on, the different velocity layers are crossfaded. So for most positions of the fader you will actually hear two velocity layers. In some positions and with some instruments this will be more evident as with others. To avoid this, simply turn Velocity X-Fade off.

If this is not the reason for your problem, please check if the Vienna Instruments get double MIDI Note on messages. This can happen when
    - Vienna Ensemble (Pro) or Vienna Instruments (Pro) is opened in standalone mode and MIDI commands come from the keyboard and from Cubase.
    - there are MIDI commands lying above each other in your Cubase tracks.
    - there is more than one MIDI track in Cubase triggering the same instrument and channel.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Andi,hi to you.

Velocty Xfade was the 1st thing I went after. In many cases for me this doubling effect is only on certain notes of an instrument, not all.

I have never used EP5 in standalone, only in Cubase. I  have looked to the dbl tracking between my controllers and Cubase, and run tests incorporating VSL & other libraries in the same project and can't create this issue with anything else.

Let me ask a question more.

Has VSL ever received any queries pertaining to Ens Pro 5  "hanging up" in Cubase 6 and up?. An indicator of this would be that Cubase runs fine but every time Cubase is shut down, a crash message occurs. Again, not during operation, but on closing. Received a query over on VI-CONTROL regarding this behavior. I'd forgotten, but that It was a condition for me with also Cubase 7-7.03.

And if so, could that be involved with not being able to access any of the new updated Ens Pro 5 versions of the Vienna Suite in the Cubase mixer? I get a "unexcepted parameter" message  in the Cubase mixer. This is what Isent screen shots of earlier of.

I think the fastest solution at this time for me would be to just start over. Ithink I'm going to uninstall Cubase al the way back to Cubase 6 and uninstall Ens Pro 5 & the Instruments Pro & start fresh.

I don't think I'd have to uninstall all of my VSL libraries, but what about unstalling VSL in the elicenser and what about the download manager. Get rid of them also?

I guess what I'm asking is if I want to completely clean any vestige of Ens Pro 7 In stmnt Pro from my system how far would you go?\

    Thanks-

    The best-

    Garr
