  • Solo Strings I & II - Ties

I'd like to have the same note played for about a minute on a violin - with long bow strokes and with the change in bow direction as imperceptible as possible. Basically, a long series of tied whole notes. What is the best way to achieve this? I'm using cubase, with solo strings 1 & 2. Thank you.

  • The issue you raise comes up from time to time.  While sustains are continuous in the other string libraries, they are not in solo strings.  In part, it has been said that this was due to it not sounding that good for a solo instrument.

That it wouldn't sound great makes some sense, as while a violinst can change bow strokes fairly quietly, an infinite sustain is not possible for a solo strings player.  Of course, in a section, an infinite sustain is possible as each player can change his or her bow stroke at a different time from the other players.  The opening to Mahler's First Symphony can serve as a good example for some very extended sectional string sustains.

As for reinitiating the note you want sustained in the solo violin, try placing the repeated note at an odd location in the measure, rather than on a beat, as that will tend to make the change a bit less obvious.

  • Hi,

Also, to get a smooth transition when re-triggering a note, you can hold down the sustain pedal.

  • Oh, I wasn't aware of the sustain pedal trick. Many Thanks!

  • Every time I try to hold the sustain pedal to retrigger a note, I just get a new note sustaining on top of the old one.  Is there a way to prevent this buildup and just get a smooth transition instead?  Thanks!

  • You either have to release the sustain pedal after playing the new note, or you must switch to "monophonic legato mode". The "trick" ist not meant to be executed on an actual sustain pedal, but rather using the respective CC.

In VI the legato transitions are triggered when the gap between 2 notes is below 50ms (in VI Pro you can change this threshold). The Sustain-trick is supposed to be used, when you want to have a new starting note (i.e. NO legato-transition), but still no audible gap between the notes. When you release the key VI "thinks" that the note was short and will play a sustain sample for the next note, but the note will actual sound as long as you old down the pedal.

  • Thanks for the response, MassMover, it would be great if VSL could set it up to work actually using the Sus pedal.

  • Hello Casiquire,

Sorry I wasn´t more specific, this only works when "monophonic legato mode" is activated, that is system-immanent.

  • OK thank you Paul!
