  • Patch locked on sustain.

While my 1st violins are performing what is in Sibelius correctly, the 2nd Violins are performing sustain, regardless of what articulation is written in Sibelius. Staccato, detache and legato are all ignored. I tried deleting the channel, and still the same. By the way, I discovered this problem when trying to see why the sustained notes which begin the piece were swelling slightly after the start of the note. The Attack setting is at zero yet I can't avoid the impression of a swell. It is not a true sustain, as each note sounds as if it was written piano with a hairpin leading to piano and a slight gap. (vel.XF is turned off) the only way I seem to be able to correct this is by turning on Vel.XF and adjusting the setting to 78. Is that the only way around that? How do I turn off the Humanize feature? When I loaded the 2nd Violin it was turned on, yet the 1st Violin loaded with it turned off. Phil

  • Hello Phil!

It can have different reasons why such a problem occurs. Please check the following things:
    - Did you load the Special Edition matrix "21S Strings violins"?
    - If you have made output or channel settings in the Sibelius mixer, please reset all outputs to (Auto).
    - The Troubleshooting section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual offers some more help.

It's in the nature of a string group that notes at the beginning of a passage have a slight swell. If you use legato instead of sustain, this swell will not be present at the following notes. You can trigger legato by using slurs.

Regarding the use of Velocity X-Fade, I recommend checking out the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, chapter "A different approach to dynamics".

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi, That helped, even though I had the Sibelius mixer as you advised, I reset it again, and it restored the correct performance. Using CC11 for Velocity X-Fade has helped enormously, and I set Expression to None. I now have two questions as a result. What amount should I set Expression at, as it will be static? And what level should I set the sliders in the Sibelius Mixer for optimum performance? Phil

  • Hello Phil!

The expression fader is nothing more than an additional volume fader. Set it to any level that sounds right for you. Also set the volume faders in the Sibelius mixer so that your instruments are well balanced. There can't be a best or right value. This is highly individual.
