  • Notion 4 and Vienna libs

Could somebody give this simpleton as simple an answer as possible without getting into Rules writing, scripting, or whatever.

Will Notion 4 play VSL instruments without a lot of hocus pocus or do you still need to get into Rules writing and a bunch of

    diddling, etc. ?

I know there is Notion SLE for Vienna and I believe its a very limited sound/articulation set.  But what about getting something

of your choice in the VSL offerings to work in Notion 4 ?

Is it doable now fairly easily ?  Is Notion going to come out with some add on if necessary that facilitates this or does it do it

already ?  Or, if necessary, is there a Rules set available to make Notion and VSL libs play together nicely ?   I noticed today Notion is now owned by Presonus and I hope this means they'll be putting more development dollars into it.

  • Hello bcarwell!

Notion 4 or Notion SLE works with our Special Edition and Special Edition PLUS collections, as well as with the Vienna Choir without any "Rules writing, scripting, or whatever". The playback rules are included with Notion. Our bigger instrument collections and single instruments won't work with Notion easily.

  • Many thanks Andi for a refreshingly clear and succinct answer as requested !  Just seals the deal for me I think in deciding on SE...

  • I'm having serious problems with some things.  For example, inserting VIPro in notion works perfectly as expected, however, when I try to use it through VEPro 5 things go crazy.  I have resolved a lot fo the issues, but the most serious outstanding one is the fact that both port. and Gliss articulations only trigger Gliss articulation in VIPro (hosted in VEPro 5).  This is one annoying problem and I can't figure it out yet!

But thank you for your lovely sounding and extremely flexible libraries, specially now that we can have MIRX, wow...

  • Notionmusic published two tutorial videos on how to set up templates with Vienna Ensemble and Notion ("Creating VST Templates Pt. 1 & 2").

  • Yes I'm aware of the tutorials and how to do all of that as well as custom rules.  In fact, much like yourselves, the staff over at notion music are incredible support.  However, the issue regarding the portamento is something that is yet to be resolved and I'm not willing to spend my time while working on tight deadlines to script custom rule sets, that would defy one of the main selling points of notion's ease of use and integration with VSL! Custom rule sets are wonderful to allow you to script your own presets for libraries that are not automatically supported or to do some specific functionalities, however, for a library that is supported and used in advertising notion, you would expect the standard functionality to work out of the box!  That said, I am certain that these issues will be resolved by notion in an upcoming update, in the mean time their excellent tech support are helping me figure out a work around!

i would recommend notion for use with vsl in a heartbeat.

    cheers

  • Hello David!

There are no glissando articulations included with the Special Edition collections. So it is correct that portamento and glissando both trigger the portamento articulation. That's no mistake.

  • Hey there,

no, I'm aware of that, but the issue I'm having is the opposite.  I also have other VSL libraries, just under a different account.

The issue is that Notion is not playing Port. and instead tries to play a fake Gliss for Gliss and Port articulations!!!

    thanks

    David

  • Hi David!

I see. This happens because of the Notion Rules for the Basic Staff. It doesn't happen with the dedicated staves. I'm afraid I can't help you more on this matter. The rules are made by the Notion team.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi for trying...

    much appreciated

    David

p.s:  is there a document somewhere which compiles a list of which articulations in Notion trigger which sample cell for VSL?

  • There's not a list that I know of, but you can open the VIP interface in Notion for SE and see how they have the insturment layed out.  Gives a pretty good idea of what articulations are used.

If you have full insturments, you can simply replace all the SE patches with full instrument patches.

  • yeah thanks, the trick is that sometimes it is not clear what an articulation is called in Notion versus the samples name in VSL, but it is nothing that complicated :)

  • But you'll be going on the VSL names; no need to know what Notion calls them...
