Hello Cyril & Ricardo, I have been reading your posts. As I am new to VSL (actually awaiting the key to be sent to me)I can mainly only talk from my experience with GPO4 and Overture. I have used Overture since it's first days and it is a very intuitive and easy program to learn, yet has developed over the many versions into a program that is very deep as well. Version 5 is being developed and it will have some good features that Finale has had for some time, which will completely eliminate any reason for Finale, in my opinion. I played around with Sibelius for a while but I found it to be less intuitive and I still prefer the easy way you can drag notes, change time values, etc in Overture. Not everyone is a keyboard player, and for someone like myself, who just likes to write on virtual staff paper, Overture is definitely the best. I am hoping (as I've indicated in other posts) that someone like me, who does not want to have to write XML files or deal with controllers, will be able to utilize the superior features of VSL. Soundwise there is nothing better and I wish I had discovered this earlier. I don't understand why Overture is relatively unknown compared to the other notation programs. Their forum members are very helpful and eager to supply answers and the product, which may have been stagnant for a short while as it was around to different distributors, is now very active. I hope more VSL users discover it. Pete

Hi Rainbow
What is the link to the Overture groupe and to the Overture support, because the piece I want to import is making Overture crash !
Overture is at 199 $, and you have a crossgrade from Finale at 79 $
What is new in Overture 5 ?
Do they have upgrade path at Sonic score ?
Best
Cyril

Here is the link http://sonicscores.com/forum/ Overture 5 is not yet available but there is much discussion about it there. Pete

Finale is rubish compared to Sibelius
I have bought Finale and I have aske a refund.
Finale is outdated, non 64bit, non multi process, it does not know how to import "quadruple croches" has problem of display heavy score
You can read my adventure with Finale at : http://forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=6&p=1&m=405487
Look at this :

What I am trying to avoid is a flamewars between william and Cyril. I know you guys don't share the same ideas or opinions. Try to play nicely along here or you'll get this thread closed. I'm not to sound bossy or very immature, but you two should get a better behavior and have a decent argument, if you mind...
I never used finale, but I used sibelius 6 in the conservatory, I was getting really along with it. While they changed to 7, I was really loving it. I can only use it in the conservatory though.
Musescore can have potential to be a great software and I'll look into overture later.
Topic Change:
Now we are all here discussing about notation softwares. What do you think about Notion 4. I heard it is great for VSL Special Editions, the only problem might seem to be is the dynamics. Is there a simpler way of doing it using hairpins but while they give midi response to CC#2

@William said:
Import quadruple croches - from MIDI? No program imports MIDI perfectly though Finale certainly does quadruple anything down to tiny note values so there is something else wrong.
I am not trying to get into a big argument, just saying it is a good program and should not be dismissed so completely like that.
I will sign off and say good luck. I only looked at this because there are always new notation programs coming out though I've never found any to be able to do more than either Finale or Sibelius.
just look at the screen copies I have post. It is no acceptable to have this. Sibelius, Logic can show this score correctly .
There is no Import problem of my test piece with Sibelius and with MuseScore !

I have bought it, very disapointed.
It is working OK for small score, an unusable for large score.
Also it is not 64 bit, it's not multi proc !

So which one would you recommend? I liked sibelius actually when I used at the conservatory. Their staff might not be the best.
Ricardo
Today I will say : NONE
I am looking at Overture 4 for the moment
I have not find yet the way to assign a midi channel to an instrument on an IAC port
I would love that Logic is able to do articulation changes !

Hi William
I did nothing wrong, just import a midi file.
This file is the Symphony From The New World of Anton Dvorak.
I work a lot with the score and the mouse (I play very badly the piano)
When you have work with Logic, Finale is so poor, not user friendly, mono task.
With Logic you can edit a track, a group of tracks while it is playing, it is very handy when you work on a part
You change instrument while it is playing add and effect, Logic is totally MULTI TASK ! but it does not deal with the articulations !!!!!
It's a pitty that Logic team would not listen to his user and add the management of the articulations !
-
Hi William
I do not want to fight with you again.
This midi file is imported with no problems in Sibelius, MuseScore, Notion SLE and Logic
I dont know why it is not imported correctly in Finale, I have set the quantize to maximum.
When you import into Logic there is nothing to specify no parameter to set !
Finale is just not made to import large complex scores and it is badly programmed (saying this politly)
This ends this sub-subject

Sometimes, I question if you guys will get along any time soon. This post was originally for Musescore debate if It was compatible with VSL and afterwards you guys turn it into a fightfest between Cyril and William. Are you willing to close every post out there? You two turned this topic discussion into rivalry for you.
My main question: Do you guys achieve anything by arguing? The last time a thread got closed because of you two. Are you willing to close this topic as well?
Ricardo

Poor William, if you think Finale is great, stays with it.
Sibelius is much better ! Logic is much better !
Again you speak of this you dont know about, have you ever programmed !
Finale is dated, it cannot import, it is mono task, it is not 64k, it has poor editing functions
