  • Orchestral Basses - G2 Harmonic Resonance

    Hello,

I am in the process of arranging a piece for orchestral basses, but found a strange artifact on one note. I noticed that G2 on the performance repetitions of the orchestral basses has a much stronger harmonic one octave above the fundamental than any of the surrounding notes, which is rather highlighted when using MIR. I don't know a lot about playing double bass; is this to be expected? Or is something going wrong with my setup? The louder harmonic seems to be the same across all repetitions except the first, which led me to believe it was a natural artifact of the instrument, and yet there is no sign of it with detaches, staccatos etc. I have tried soloing the dry signal in MIR, and the artifact is still there, so I ruled out unexpected frequency resonance within the venue..

Would anyone be able to advise/confirm if this is correct please, or if this is a problem with my system? And what the best way for countering it might be? At the moment I'm switching to detaches for G2, but obviously this sounds a bit different. Would using the Vienna Suite equaliser on the harmonic frequency be the best response?

    Many thanks.

  • Sorry, this should have been in the Instruments Libraries forum, got those mixed up.

  • Hello Peter,

what you're hearing is the resonance of the open G-string of the double basses, which is a normal behavior of the instrument, if G2 is played in tune. So, in a way it's an attribute of quality which an double bass player is looking for.

    I hope that helps,

    All the best, Michael Hula

  • Hi Michael,

Thanks very much, as it is a natural characteristic of the instrument I shall stick with it. I did find it hard to believe that something could be wrong with a VSL sample!

  • ... but like in Real Life, there's nothing wrong with cutting that frequency range for a few dB in case it gets distracting! :-)
