  • Can Anyone tell me what causes this Bell-like hum?

    Hi

I'm just now starting to use Vienna strings. I've been using Miroslav and am now going through the process of converting Miroslav's strings on all my songs to Vienna.

I'm getting a bell-like hum in parts of a song I'm working on. I've tried disabling all EQ effects, and the hum is still there. With reverb disabled, it's not as prominent. But I don't think it's the reverb's fault because I've not had this issue with any other song, and all my orchestral songs use the same reverb preset in IK Multimedia's Classic Studio Reverb - Hall.

Anyhow, the song features Vienna Special Edition Orchestral Strings and Special Edition Piano and Percussion, EastWest Goliath for the drum kit, and Miroslav Philharmonik for brass and winds.

My DAW is Studio One Producer

I've narrowed it down to 3 Vienna instruments causing the problem: Piano, Full Strings Sustain, and Harp because if I remove any one of these instruments, the bell hum is still present, but if I remove all three the hum goes bye bye.

Here's a clip with those 3 instruments in.

    Hum

Here's the same clip with those 3 instruments out. As you can tell, Full Strings Tremolo is not part of the issue.

    No Hum

    Can anyone help me out?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  •  Are you using VI Pro or VI ?

If you are using VI Pro,  check that it's reverb is not on as well.

  • Hi,thanks for answering. I've got VI's reverb turned off all instruments. I think the issue is resolved now. This sounds weird, but this is what I think was happening: I think it was some kind of frequency clash between those three instruments. When I changed the full strings to a higher octave, the bell-humming stopped. Weird, eh?

  • I could imagine that the low frequency range of the harp can be slightly overwhelming in some contexts. Try to reduce the range below 200 Hz with a shelving EQ for quite some dB (or use the built-in EQ of VI Pro with a bread bell in the same range for the task.

... Vienna Suite's Equalizer comes with a few presets which address this possible issue, too.

  • Thanks very much for the tips! I don't have VI Pro, but I wish I did. I would love to have the VI equalizer. Can it be bought separately? I can't afford the entire suite. Thanks, Mike

    Hi Mike,

VI PRO offers an included 3-band EQ, and you can use your sequencer´s reverb as well!

Vienna Suite is only available as a bundle - and you can test-drive it, like all our software products, with a free demo license (click "try" on the respective product page).

    Best,

  • Thanks very much, Paul! I was actually looking at VI Pro in depth. It's got a lot of features I want. But I don't like to try the things I can't afford. I fall in love with those things and it tempts me to buy them. ;)
