  • Here's a little trick to match solo and ensemble sounds in VI Pro

    Hi,

don't know if this is common knowledge, but... I was trying to match the sound of a solo instrument (say for instance triple horn) to an ensemble version (say 8 epic horns). So that I can go from a solo sound to an ensemble sound more seamlessly. My solution was kind of a "Eureka" moment for me so I decided to share it here for those who might want to do the same thing.

I read somewhere that the ensemble samples are recorded with the mic at a greater distance. And that's why solo instruments sound so direct and ensemble more distanced. This technique especially works well for me when I have a horn section playing unisono (like Horns a4), and want to split the unisono line into a 4 part harmony realistically (using 4 solo triple horns). I pan the solo horns quite wide apart to match the ensemble stereo image.

Here's my trick: in VI Pro, add some of the built in reverb to the solo sound. .5 second tail, 100% damp, 50% wet. It matches perfectly with the reverb in the samples of the ensemble instruments. The solo instrument sound more distanced, like the ensemble sound. Also roll off some of the highs. Sound convincing to me :D

Try it if you haven't :)
