  • Pro Tools crash when trying to reconnect

Hi, I have a master running PT10 and a slave running VE Pro and VSTs. The problem occurs when my slave goes into sleep mode and I turn it back on. The instance is still visible on the slave server and appears as connected, though in PT it is not. When I hit Connect in the PT VE Server, the slave computer appears as normal, but when I select it and hit Connect, I get the Mac spinning rainbow and nothing happens. When I try to delete the instance in the slave computer I get the message "Please disconnect from this instance before deleting", and when I force disconnect I get the warning "It is recommended to disconnect from the Server Interface plugin instead." Can you clarify what is the Server Interface plugin and how I can use it to disconnect this instance? Also, any tips on reconnecting my host to its slave after slave goes into sleep mode would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • Why are you allowing your slave to go into sleep mode? Do you have to?

  • Hi, I don't, but prefer not to keep everything running when I leave for an errand etc, and was checking if there is a way to put everything on power save without shutting all of my projects. Thanks

  • OK, I can't answer your question, but I do know that in the past Avid recommended not using sleep mode, as it messed with the audio driver. Whether or not it is the same issue with network, I don't know.

  • I'm using ProTools 10HD (10.3.6) on Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and VEP 2.3.12337.  I recently updated PT and VEP to these versions.  First, you should definitely take Avid's recommendation of turning off sleep mode on your PT computer.  I also have 'power save' off on my PC slaves.  The tiny amount of energy you'll use is way offset by potential issues - as I guess you're seeing.... :)

Anyway, after moving to the new VEP version, for some reason I was only getting RTAS versions to instantiate in PT, which I did.  But, I had numerous issues with channels being corrupted, and being unable to open PT on previously OK sessions.  This may have been due to trying to use the score editor (which is what I suspect).  Anyway, after re-installing VEP, and making sure I checked AAX, it was back.  Must have been operator error when I installed.   Anyway, I am now only using AAX versions, and not opening score editor at all in my actual sessions.  Everything has been stable.  Are you using the RTAS plugin or AAX?

But, getting back to your issues, during this process, I saw on more than one occasion just what you are seeing.   VEP slave looking like it's connected, PT interface showing it was not.  Don't be afraid to just disconnect the instance in your slave (after making sure your PT instance is disconnected).  I have done that and it doesn't blow up.... :).   Sometimes just rebooting my master ProTools computer and relaunching fixed everything (and leaving the slaves alone - but disconnecting them....).  I think you then have to manually reconnect everything, but it should start working properly then.

One last thing, you're using the same version of VEP on all computers, right.  They should all be the same version.

  • Thank you so much for your answer and apologies for replying late. I just stopped using sleep mode. I am now in PT11 so using AAX and it is working fine.
