The only workaround I know is to create a second midi track without the expression map.
That' the way every expression maps works. When the Expression map use a keyswitch, it blocks any incoming signal for that note (same for CC's) because it take in charge of switching articulations. You have to use the keyswitch that are set under the ''remote'' column in the expression map set up window and you can modify or add these.
The reason why it is so is because cubase can send more than one keyswitch or CC or program change with a single remote key and it remap this keyswitch to these so called sound slots. Not sure that's a clear explanation but you should take a look at the cubase manual.
