    I'm using Beat Kaufmann's method (thanks Beat!) to double the size of the Dimension Strings violins from 8 to 16 players (and it sounds quite good). I'd like to set up a "Group 2" preset for this second group of violins. Ideally, this preset would already have pitch bend applied. However, the Vienna Instruments player automatically "snaps back" the pitch bend value to 0 even when I unassign it from the pitch bend wheel on my MIDI controller. This is annoying, as it means I have to remember to apply the pitch bend (and in the correct direction) every time I'm recording this section.

    Does anyone have any ideas for how to work around this?

    I'm quite new to VSL, so I might be misunderstanding your question, but I am using both transpose and pitch bend. I'm transposing up one note in Cubase and pitch bending down one note in Vienna Instruments to achieve the doubling. The question I have is whether I can make the pitch bend "permanent" in Vienna Instruments instead of having to ride the pitch bend wheel all the time. If there is a better way to do this, I'm all ears.

    It looks like there are some other approaches to doubling sections while still managing to avoid phasing issues, so I'm going to give them a try.

    I'm going to try a few different things.

    One of them is "European" seating with Violins 1 on the left and Violins 2 on the right. That might help minimize phasing issues.

    A second possibility is taking advantage of the multiple legato and sustain articulations, for example. I'm going to see how it sounds with Violins 1 playing legato with vibrato and Violins 2 playing legato without vibrato in unison.

    Something else that occurred to me is the humanize functionality. By taking advantage of delay and tuning, it might be possible to minimize phasing when playing unison lines.

    No idea how well any of these will work with Dimension Strings but I'm going to give them a try this evening.

    Hi Symfoniq. In order to defeat the continual 'snapping back' to pitch bend zero you could record a PB +1 in your sequencer and then copy (or merge) the command to the instrument track you want to pitch-bend - you'll also need a PB=0 command at the end of the doubling passage. To help your workflow, you could incorporate two small regions (one for PB+1, the other for PB=0) into your template and copy them into sequences where required - this would save you recording them each time.

    Please note that Special Edition instruments use tone (as opposed to chromatic) mapping, so to make this trick work with SE you will need to use PB+2 in order to access a new sample! Wink

    What you can do is to assign any controller to pitch bend in the controllers area, and then be sure to insert at the beginning of the MIDI file track that same controller at 32, or 0, or whatever degree of pitch bend you want (usually pitch bending down is better than up I have noticed with trills, vibrato, etc.).  Then, in most sequencers the controller will "chase" throughout the file as soon as you begin playing/recording and you don't have to do anything more.  Also, make sure that pitch is not still being controlled by another controller which would reset it to a different value.
