  • Exporting Sibelius 7 Scores with Solo and Ensemble Instruments on Same Staff to MIDI Files

    Hello all,

Is there a trick to exporting Sibelius 7 scores with VSL Solo and Ensemble instruments on the same staff to MIDI files and them getting them to work when importing the MIDI to a DAW? I've following the instructions in the VE Optimizing Sibelius Playback v7.2 document, and the switching works great when playing the score within Sibelius, but I can't get it to work in the DAW (FL Studio 11). I am even using the exact same Vienna Ensemble PRO file in both Sibelius and FL Studio, but FL Studio seems to only know about the MIDI channel with the ensemble instrument; I have the additional "reserved" channel for the solo instrument, but FL Studio never utilizes that channel.

As a work around, I've duplicated the staff in Sibelius, with the solo measures in one staff and tutti/ensemble measures in the other,  but it'd be great to be able to utilize a single staff with solo and tutti performing the switching.

    Thank you in advance,

    Stevan

  • Hello Stevan!

When you insert an instrument change in Sibelius, the program sends a channel switch. I'm not sure if this channel switch is included in the exported MIDI file or if FL Studio can read this channel switch. I would check the MIDI data in FL Studio and try to insert the channel switch again if it isn't there. If this doesn't work, you will probably have to duplicate the track.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thank you so much, Andreas - I will research this and post my finding should anyone else have a similar question in the future. And if I haven't said so already, I cannot tell you how much I love VSL (I have had more than one moment with tears of joy while listening to my mixes) and the wonderful customer service you provide. And although it is off-topic, Ensemble Pro and MIR Pro are the most impressive applications I've seen since Bars and Pipes!
