  • Thunderbolt SSDs random access time

    Hello everyone,

I am a Logic user and I see the new Mac Pros will rely heavily on Thunderbolt expandability.

Random access time is what matters most when streaming samples, so I am wondering how TB SSDs fare in that department compared to PCIe solutions. Anyone tested both?

    Cheers

  • I have tested them extensively. My results are now a state secret and I will not share them with anyone under any circumstances.

    Good morning.

  • It might be wise to research bandwidth comparisons between the newer PCIe specs, and Thunderbolt.  From what I've seen - though admittedly second hand, and not something I have an interest in researching further to verify - the newer PCIe bandwidth specs are considerably better than Thunderbolt.

  • the question here is not thunderbolt and/or SSD, it is the harddisk-controller (on the expansion unit which is required to translate the PCIe x4 signal to the SSD interface).

the same problem occured with some raid-boxes - if they allow a native read-through (of sample data) everything is fine. if they don't, caching of (finally not used) data kills all the theoretically available performance.

    I totally agree Cyril.

But not anywhere near as ridiculous as the French Agricultural Policy or the EU.  [:D]
