  • VSL Strings vs 8DIO Adagio Strings

I just had a look at the number of articulations from volume 1 of every string (cello, violin, viola, bass). It seems that they are getting close to the number of articulation from VSL strings (probably trying to imitate). Considering it is only volume 1 I highly assume they are going to produce more volumes with even more articulations, for example beating that of VSL solo strings. Are there are any plans to release updates to existing string libraries?

A great idea would be offering "expansion packs" for every library, just like we do with the MIR and "roompacks". For example, every new pack could include a variety of a certain articulation. Pack 1 could have over X number of legato styles, pack 2 various types of staccatos, pack various glissando speeds and styles and so on. Existing users of any of the full collections could then purchase those packs. I think this idea would be most beneficial for us users and also for VSL which will always have unmatched number of articulations.

What do you personaly think of 8Dios Violin?

Do you think we should have additional articulation packs for Solo Strings, Dimension String etc?

Dont understand me wrong, VSLs strings are the master of its kind. However, im willing to buy more articulations in a near future. What does the community think?

  • VSL have decide go with the full control over the players with the dimension collections and I think they will continue in that direction. Maybe they'll add the Sordino patches after that. ANd maybe some new articulations sometimes. I really like the Dimension approach. But in the strings Librairies world, no collection can be absolutly be complete. With the 8Dio approach, you will add some abilty to perform some really expressive legatos in different styles and tempo wich is great. But again, I think you'll miss some feature from other librairies.  I bought the new Clarinet and Oboe from 8Dio and it is really expressive but there is few articulations. I'm thinking to add Orchestra tools Symphonic sphere and Strings Runs to my setup for specific needs.

One thing I do to create a Adagio-Violin-kind of legato with VSL is to blend a legato patch with a pfp patch controlled by the slot crossfade. I start a phrase with the pfp and crossfade with the legato patch. Works great with the dimension violins. VI Pro is so costumizable, but others make some stuff with kontakt script that can't be done with the actual VI Pro player.

My only wish with dimension Strings and other VSL lib is that they make a better ''auto-divisi engine'' than the existing one. The one from LASS works with legato patches. And a ''real'' speed control over legato and portamento transition would be great to. But they'll need to rewrite the samples programing of they're libraries for that. Of coarse I could time-stretched my legato patches but I'd need to buy a new SSD to put the processed samples with the dimension strings collection.

  • As I already said before in my other post: I think Dimension Strings is a good idea for adding Orchestral Texture, Noises and subtle humanization. DS is also great for a Violin 2. Conductors will love it. A Violinist will love it. However, normal everyday consumers really wont capture the details. Therefore I really believe that adding expansion packs for Solo Strings or dimension strings would be extemely powerful.
