  • Pro Tools 11 vs Cubase 7 (RTAS/VST/AAX, Midi editing, Mixing...)

    Hi,

Once and every while when one of the DAW sharks decide to release a new update a lot of the same questions get asked. Which one is the best?

...And just as often the same answers pop up, Cubase is superior in Midi editing, Pro tools is finest for completing a mix. But now with the recently release of Cubase 7 and the latest AVID Pro Tools 11, does it change anything?

With Pro Tools 11 AVID says that they have continued on their valiant quest to evolve Pro Tools in to the definitive DAW. Beginning at Pro Tools 9 they have really stepped up with their Midi editing and now pairs with the newly acquired peer-program Sibelius which we all know too well. They say that they have the best VI support ever now running on their 64-bit architecture.

Steinberg however have totally re-designed and updated their mixing console up to the point where you may ask, do you ever need Pro Tools now to complete a wonderful master mix? With their already solid user base, stable architecture, flawless midi editing, and support of VST - do you need anything else?

Yeh. You guessed it. I am on a mission to upgrade. And for the first time I feel like I am lost, should I go right... or left?

With Pro tools 11 AVID finally decided to ditch their RTAS for another format, AAX. What about RTAS past issues with poor CPU and memory utilization and lack of support, does the step up to AAX change anything? If you decide to stay with Pro Tools 10 (which AVID also support license for if you buy Pro Tools 11) host your VI in VEPro anyway, is there any difference in sound quality if you run RTAS/VST?

My rig consists of AVID... and M-Audio stuff. I've the Mbox 3 Pro FW interface which has been great to use with Pro tools 8 and Cubase 6 alike. My master key is a MAudio Oxygen 88. Would I gain anything by running with AVID all the way? Will the midi editing, workflows, plugins ever going to run as well on Pro Tools RTAS? Most of my main plugins are from the VSL team, Suite, MIR, VEPro5 etc. Would I risk any loss of quality if I used them on RTAS instead of VST?

Lets' start there and see where these discussions take off. I am guessing that there are a lot of opinions around this topic.

  • Hi Jhonny,

Sometimes it looks i am the only one who think about things like this.

So let us start (one year later) a Discussion about the Midi Features of this two DAW.

    How it looks in ProTools.

Do they have Expression-Map Possibilitys like Cubase? Or you still have to move Keyswitches?

If there will be some Reactions on my Reply, whe can go deeper in Details.
