  • Suggestions? Mix?

    http://soundcloud.com/iscorefilm/clocktheme

I haven't really started any real mixing on this yet so I know it needs some work but I do want some fresh ears on it. Anyone have any feedback? Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • I have to say I really like it, I think the mix sounds great, and you have very clear definition in the instruments, did you do this with mir pro? If so, I'd love to know what venue, what mics on the instruments, and which main microphone (did you use cardiod-M), and did you use a secondary mic etc? My only comment for you to improve on this piece would be the instrument at the very beginning, I think it's a cello? or bass? Anyways it sounds very sharp, maybe turn down the hi's a little.

  • Reminds me a bit of Sherlock Holmes lol, very cool!  I see what hzambrana means about the intro, but personally I'd give the brass (like a minute in) a bit more dynamics to sound more like real players breathing.

  • Thanks to both of you,

I've been thinking about that cello, so I'll play with it. The brass part you mentioned may not be an issue as I'm going to record a horn player on that part anyway. I'll probably try to match the expression to that performance (to a point).

I keep thinking I can bring everything out more. I don't think it's suffering in that area, but I feel like there's something more I can do to make everything heard and I haven't put my finger on it yet.

    Thanks again,

    Sean

  • hzambrana,

I forgot to say... I actually use several different IR's for different instruments. I don't actually know the name of the venues, as my IR library just says a generic file name. It's Ernest Cholakis's Hollywood Impulses. For the sound of the room I really just mix and match. I use different rooms, different settings for one instrument/section. I play it by ear. Whatever gives me the sound I want for that section (relative to the overall sound I want for the whole), is what I listen for.

I'm not going to be mixing this for a while (as I'm not recording the horn for at least a couple weeks), but if I remember I'll post a newer version on here.

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • Aah great idea to get live horns, that'll add the "breath" I'm talking about!  Well I hope you remember to upload the new version.
