  • Vienna, Sibelius, and Reaper Workflow

Greetings all, VE and Reaper work very handily together in my current Mac Book Pro set-up, and I'm wondering if the addition of Sibelius will fit seamlessly into this work flow? Right now, Reaper will configure a single instance of VE into 16 individual MIDI tracks, and 16 additional audio tracks linked to the MIDI tracks (32 Reaper tracks in total not including a "master" VE track). The dual set of Reaper 16 MIDI and audio tracks are freely configurable with 16 channels in VE depending on the routing choices in made in VE. My question is, would the addition of Sibelius fit into this scheme without altering the convenient, flexible routing already in place between VE and Reaper? Thanks so much. p.s. the "16 MIDI" and "16 audio tracks" scenario is for the AU version of VE, but the VST version offers 32 channels with the same configurability...

  • Hello chammer!

I don't know Reaper, but the only way I can imagine bringing Sibelius into this setup is with ReWire. I don't know if Reaper offers this technology though.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi, thanks for the reply. Yes Reaper supports ReWire. Once I ReWire Sibelius into Reaper, can you tell me how the general set-up would go? In other words, after I open up a Sibelius session and assign the desired Vienna sound sets how do I work through VE into Reaper (basically, how do I maintain the routing between VE and Reaper that I've described above)? If there's a video tutorial you may know of (not for Reaper, but for how to work with VE and Sibelius) I'd be grateful. Thanks again for your time.

  • I was going to ask why you need to add Sibelius into your workflow?  The technical question of how do I get this to work are different than workflow, i.e. the process YOU use to write/render your music.

So if you can tell us how Sibelius would fit into your process then we can probably answer technically how to "wire it all up".  Make sense?

  • Hi chammer!

We made a video tutorial on how to use our software with Sibelius.

A detailed manual about this topic can be found here:

About the details of rewiring Sibelius with Reaper, please refer to their manuals.

  • Hi Winknotes, thanks for the reply. Perhaps my terminology is incorrect. Currently, when using a VE instance in Reaper I create the MIDI sequences in Reaper's MIDI Editor window. I would like to replace that process (creating the MIDI sequences in Reaper's MIDI Editor window) with the notational/sequencing functions in Sibelius, while also maintaining the superb routing that I am able do now between VE and Reaper (described in the initial post). Cheers.

  • I'm using Finale in the same way that I think you want to use Sibelius. What I do is write my music by hand, then input it into Finale. This helps me generate a score and parts. Then, I save my Finale file as a MIDI file. I then import that MIDI file into Reaper. On each MIDI channel, I put an instance of the Vienna Instruments. This gives me independent mixing control of all of the tracks. Hope this helps.
