  • Need help with MIR's Room EQ please..

I'm not the biggest expert in EQ'ing reverbs/rooms. I could use some advice.

I use many different Kontakt sample libraries. Some have a brighter room and recording sound (CineBrass for example), and some are darker (Albion and Cinematic Strings 2). I've demoed all of the MIR Room Packs, and while all of them sound great, either, in general, some of them are too bright for me, or they tend to make my libraries even brighter, especially at higher dynamic ranges. I would like to get a darker sound from some of the rooms.

Is there a "professional's way" to approach this using MIR's Room EQ? Or do I eq the instrument before MIR? Or is there a combination of things to do to tone down the room in a way that is still very musical and pleasing to the ear. Since it sounds like the room is bright, I'm guessing that MIR's Room Eq is the starting place.

    1) If someone could tell me to some of the basic tried and true frequencies and +/-db to start with, that would be a very big help to me.

    2) Are there presets for download or anywhere else that I could use as a starting point? Would someone mind emailing me an eq preset?

    3) Is Room eq discussed in one of the manuals?

    4) Would it be advisable to try Vienna Suite, or is MIR's eq enough to get a darker sounding room?

    5) Can MIRacle help with this on the master bus? Thanks for any help and putting up with a beginner's question. Steve

  • I've felt this way for a long time--it's like everything from VSL accents the brightness and clarity but it's often difficult to get the kind of warmth I want. EQ helps a ton but I'd prefer to just use a warm reverb or warm hall in MIR.

  •  Welcome Thenightwatch,

first of all please allow for an off-topic hint: Our forum engine insists on setting an actual meaningless value as the default for the format of your messages on these pages. I would leave MIRacle out of the equation as long as you're not pleased with the results you get from MIR Pro alone. MIRacle will be able to enhance and/or "animate" the spatial sounds MIR Pro is able to achieve, but it's not something that _has_ to be part of the signal chain. Quite contrary: Longing for a warm, natural sound, an algorithmic reverb wouldn't be my first choice at all.

  • Oh wow, thank you so much.  I didn't know about the "enhanced" post editor, AND I didn't know about the venue presets, so you've been very helpful!

  • Wow! Great reply! Thank you.

I fixed my profile. Thanks for telling me.

After I posted I went and read all of the manuals. Every word. Good manuals! I did read "Getting that sound". Thanks.

I have been listening very closely to the room's tone, trying different mics setups in different positions, changing the volume offset, turning instruments around or putting them in places that sound good (instead of look right), and I've tried the different charecteristics (Air, Warm, etc..). I discovered from day one that visual placement isn't always the correct solution. That's one of the cool things about MIR I think. As visual as MIR is, it's all about listening. But the visual aspect really helps with that.

I just was not sure how to go about "eqing a room" without killing the room sound. I'm still learning about the differnt types of mic setups but hearing the change each one makes (more bass, or more spread) is a great way to learn about them.

I wil definitally take your suggestions about eq settings from the other thread (below), and take your advice about MIRacle. I have been sparse with MIRacle as it does add a lot of color, reverb and modulation. I've started with some of the presets then pulled the wet signal far down. The preset "info tips" above the Speaker Setup are very helpful. I've also tried messing around with Dampning and EQ in MIRacle too.

A couple of follow up questions if you don't mind.

    1) Is MIRacle 64-bit? In DP8 (64bit mode), MIRacle comes up fine without a 32-bit brisge. But in Logic, it's showed as a 32-bit plugin and requires the 32-bit bridge.

    2) Regarding what you said, "it's not integrated into MIR Pro's engine in the same way like its own Room EQ", Is the room eq in MIR a "post processing" reverb? Or does it somehow interact with the different IRs and mics in some way? Does that make sense? In other words, could I use a different plugin reverb post MIR and get the same results? Or is MIR's EQ integrated in some way? (just so I understand what I'm doing better)

    3) I have a question about the venue presets and MIR24 that you answered in the other thread, but I'll post it there.

Sorry for the long reply, but thanks for your detailed response. My sound of my cues have been like night and day since getting MIR and I'm now thinking of getting Vienna Suite and VEPro (I'd like to take the load off of my DAW).

Glad to be a part of this community!
