Overall volume of strings in Notion 4 + glissandi

Hi Andreas,

1. When I open a orchestra score in Notion 4, it appears that all non VSL instruments (ARIA woodwinds, Notion LSO brass and percussion, Kontakt 5 choir) are a lot louder than the VSL string samples. When I enter a pp for the violins, they are hardly audible whereas the flutes are distinctively present with that dynamic. I have to raise the mixer volume to the maximum in order to compete with the other instruments.

Is there any way to augment the starting volume in the VI-interface? I'm quite new with VSL and I'm still learning how to deal with the aspects and settings of the interface.

2. It may be a Notion feature, but none of the string glissandi/portamento seem to work with the VSL strings

I work with Notion 4 on imac fusion drive 27", 3.4 Ghz, VSL Special Edition Strings 1 and 1+

Hi Jos!

I'll go straight to your questions.

1.) Notion uses CC11 to control the dynamics. The VI presets for Notion have CC11 assigned to Velocity XFade and Master Volume by default. This way you will get double dynamics and piano and pianissimo will be very soft. If you assign another controller (or none) to Master Volume in VI and leave this fader at around 100, the general volume will be higher.

2.) Glissando articulations are not included in the Special Edition or Special Edition PLUS volumes. Portamento should work just fine. At least it works here. Take care that you choose your instruments from the Notion/Score Setup/VSL Special Edition menu.

I will give it a try for the volume (I hope the dynamic changes will still work from the score).

As to the portamento: it just doesn't work, although I've set up my score exactly as you told. But yesterday, I got a mesage from Notion that there is some kind of bug in the latest update which prevents any kind of gliding sounds. They will look into the matter (fo the next update?).

In my string matrix, I see the glissandi. Does that mean that Notion doesn't have presets for it?

Right, some of the portamentos seem to slide to the start note instead of the target note. Good to know that the Notion team is working on that.

I can't imagine that you see a glissando articulation in a Special Edition or Special Edition PLUS preset, because it simply isn't included. This must be some kind of misunderstanding.
