  • Turning off stacatto

I'm using SE1 with Sibelius 7 on a Macbook Pro. So far, with a little effort, I have been able to make most things work, including all the articulations and dynamics (most of the time). However today I ran into a problem on a Horn line where I put a stacatto mark "." over some notes and now the stacatto is stuck on for the rest of the notes in the piece, even if there is no stacatto mark. Anybody else have this problem, is there a solution? Thanks.

  • Hello tenorjazz!

Make sure that you have reserved a channel/program for every staff in your score on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page. If you use an instrument more than once, you will have to reserve the according number of channels.

If this doesn't help, I recommend resetting all output devices in the Sibelius mixer to (Auto). Making manual settings there can mess up your playback.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Perhaps I misunderstand how I can use the instruments. If I want to have 4 horn parts I what I have done is create 4 separate entries in Vienna Ensemble using the same horn sample. I assign a different midi channel to each of the horn parts. When I go to the score and open the mixer all the horn parts are assigned to the first midi channel, the only way I can separate the parts is to manually assign them. This seems to work for the strings, oboe, trumpet and so on, but for the horn I run into the problem with the staccato. I must be doing something wrong or don't understand how the pieces fit together. What I'm trying to do is set up an orchestra with the following instruments and each instrument needs to be able to perform articulation separately. I set up 4 ENSEMBLE instruments as follows. ENSEMBLE #1 2 flutes 2 oboes english horn 2 clarinets bass clarinet 2 bassoons contra bassoon ENSEMBLE #2 2 french horns 2 french horns (ensemble) solo trumpet 2 trumpets (ensemble) solo trombone 2 trombones (ensemble)) tuba ENSEMBLE #3 solo violin solo viola solo cello solo bass 2 violin 1 (ensemble) 2 violin 2 (ensemble) 2 viola (ensemble) 2 cello (ensemble) bass (ensemble) Piano Harp VIENNA ENSEMBLE #4 Timpani Bass Drum Snare Drum Each sample is assigned a unique midi channel within their perspective ENSEMBLE instrument. I have set things up as I stated and it seems to work, but please let me know how I should do it differently if this is not correct. Again if I use Auto, only the first instrument in the groups of same samples is set to the correct midi channel the others are set to the midi channel assigned by auto. Les

  • I was doing some more testing this morning and found out the sounds are NOT working as I had thought. I was testing the dynamics and found that only the one of the instruments I set up was following the dynamic and the other did not. For example I have 2 flutes samples on 2 different midi channels in the same ENSEMBLE INSTRUMENT, the first flute followed the dynamics where as the second did not. So the question is..... How do you get two different flutes, or any instrument, to follow two different dynamics and articulations? I am assuming that this can be done.

  • Hello Les!

As written in my last post, please don't make output or channel settings in the Sibelius mixer. Could it be that you didn't make settings on the Manual Sound Sets page as I suggested in my last mail?

A detailed description on how to set up Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble can be found in the "Optimzing Sibelius Playback" manual, which can be downloaded here:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/en/68/141/460/576/655.htm

    I hope this helps.

  • I did make the settings in the Manual Sound Set page and i feel as though I have followed the steps defined in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, but I will go through the process one more time from scratch to see if I've missed something.

I do have a question about using the Solo and ensemble on the same staff:

    _

You say... It is possible to switch between a solo instrument and an ensemble of the same instrument on one staff.

    _

    1) Reserve a channel for the solo and the ensemble instrument on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page and in Vienna Ensemble.

    _

2a) For wind instruments switch with the Technique Text commands “tutti” (or “a2”, “a3”, “a4”) and “solo”. (Only available with Vienna Symphonic Library House Style loaded.)

    _

2b) For strings create an instrument change (for example from Viola to Solo Viola).

    _

Can you please elaborate on Item 1) where you talk about reserving a channel for the solo and ensemble instrument, and Item 2b) how to change the string instrument in the score.

    _

    Thank You

    Hello Les!

You can do an instrument change in Sibelius 7 in the menu Home/Change.
