  • Sibelius 7. dynamic marks volume

    Hi,

When I write  dynamic mark (pp or ppp) in sib. I can`t hear nothing. Its too low volume.

I would like hear even something when I use those dynamic marks.

Can somebody tell me solution that I can use whole dynamic scale e.g. ppp to fff ? Thank you.

  • Hello Markus!

I recommend assigning another controller than CC11 (or none) to Expression. This way you avoid double dynamics. More about this topic can be found in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, page 17, which can be downloaded here:

    Hi Andy,

Thank you for your answer. Thank you for the advice I will try out your solution. Further, Sibelius 7 midi commands are not working properly. It could be an aspect of the program that could be improved so as to be able to concentrate more on composing than on midi commands or on playback systems. I was wondering if it is possible to define Sibelius's dynamics in the set up or program them into settings so that the dynamic marks can be used as they should be used?
Does this problem exist only in the Vienna library or is it a common problem with the Sibelius 7?

If you have any other hints regarding these issues, I would be grateful for them.

    Best regards,

    Markus

  • Dynamics for playback are defined in the SIbelius Playback Dictionary.  Assuming you imported the VSL house style, the dictionary definitions are appropriate for this library.  But it is possible to alter those values to anything you want.

  • Hi Andi,

Thank u for tips. Can u tell me how I can alter value e.g. dyn.mark ppp that C11 would be then 7 (at a moment value is 0 vhen I write ppp on the score and pp is 14 etc.)

Also I have to try to get brass open and mute works on one line. Maybe I do semething wrong, this not work for me.

For the VE Strings sound set refer to page 11. For the sound sets VE Special Edition, VE Special Edition PLUS and VE Woodwinds + Brass you can do as follows:
    1) Reserve two channels for the instrument on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page, one with the normal program and one with the “mute” program.
    2) In Vienna Ensemble also add two instruments. Use the same channels you set up on the Manual Sound Sets page.
    3) In one Vienna Instrument load the natural instrument, and in the other one the muted instrument. 4) To switch from normal to muted, just use the Technique Text “con sordino” or “mute”.
Note: The Technique Text command “stopped” for the Horns only works with the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style loaded. To switch back, use “ord.”, “normal”, “natural” or “senza sordino”.

(I think I should do this with matrix in vienna? Can u tell me this solution step by step)

  • Hello Markus!

Like dbudde has already written, when you use the "Vienna Symphonic Library" House Style, the dynamic values are optimized for our libraries. If you want to alter the values, you can do so in the Sibelius dictionairy. Look for the entries ppp, pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff and fff.

How to change between muted and open brass instruments is already explained step by step. If you have problems, please explain in detail what you have tried exactly and what happens.

  • Hi Andi,

    Thank you for yor answer.

Yes I found a solution about dynamic marks. Now when I wrote ppp is playback something really low vol. (Strings value is 5) but I can hear it! I understand that it's quite nesessary to make own setup to perform optimal playback for my own taste. But now it works like I want.

I know now also how to make open/mute in same line with vienna ensamble. I am just curious can I make it happen if I load in Vienna instrument player two matrix? One open and one muted. Would it be easier? But obviously in matrix one can't choose a midi channel?

But anyway VSL systems is like paradise after East West!!!

    Thanks again

    Regards

    Markus

  • Hi Markus!

    Thanks for your kind words.
When working with Sibelius and our collections, you will need two separate channels for an open brass instrument and its muted equivalent. Having them on one channel in two matrices is possible in theory, but is cumbersome and without any additional benefit.

    Andi
