  • Dimension Strings 2nd violins question

I just tried the transposition -2/pitchbend +2 trick with Dimension Strings to get 2nd Violins, and it seems to work very well. However, is there another method of creating 2nd violins in DS from within Vienna Inst Pro, and without using MIR? Thanks.

  • Yes--there is a transpose setting somewhere in there as well as detuning. Personally I recommend detuning the piece because you can control whether it's slightly out-of-tune or not, and by how much, because I've still heard what sounds like slight phasing when samples aren't detuned just a little bit. Once you do one of those two things just use pitchbend to correct it.

  • Just a head's up:

WIth any of the full libraries you only have to transpose a half-step to get the needed change, as the full libraries have samples for each half-step.  It is only in SE that one has to go by whole step, since the violin samples in SE are by whole-step, not half-step.

  • Have you tried using a preset constructed of the OS string patches for the Seconds rather than the RE patches?

  • I don't think this would work. Don't the OS presets just use open strings whenever possible, but that other times the samples might be exactly the same as in RE?
