In LAYMANS terms could someone explain to me how VSL differentiates between "Vel X Fades" (Dynamic changes AND timbre) and cc11-Expression? I had thought that cc11 was doing the same thing. If so, is there a reason to use both unless so as to use Vel xfade as a primary and cc 11 as a final boost, with the Master Vol cc7 left at 127 in IP2 and run instead as an automatible per track Vol boost in the DAW mix?
    Thanks

  • Velocity cross fades are actually shifting in between different samples for pp, mp, f, ff etc.  Expression is a simple overall volume adjustment and does not affect any samples other than turning them up or down in amplitude.  So you could turn down a fortissimo sample with expression and all it would do is lower it like a knob on a radio. Very unnatural.    But with velocity crossfade, you can access new samples that represent accurately the playing style of soft, loud, medium loud, etc.

Expression is useful though for adding volume changes AFTER you have adjusted the actual sample level of piano, fortimssimo, or whatever.  It can help with additional expressiveness within a single sampled timbre of loudness.
