  • Dimension Strings Track Count

    Hi VSL Team,

I am currently redesigning my core template and trying to make sure that I leave room in my template for the other dimension strings.  Hopefully if it's not to much to ask, can I get a "chair" count of the other sections or is this not even determined yet?  In Violins we have 8 from solo's, 4 from 2 chair combos, 2 from 4 chair combos and then all 8 combined.  I have a total of 15 tracks for my violins in VE PRO (basically its own midi input).  i want to be sure I leave enough "logical" numbers open so my VE PRO setup is in chronological midi input and channel.  It's so annoying for me to see midi 8 - 1, midi 8 - 2, then suddenly midi 29 - 4 because I didn't plan to insert an instrument there haha :).  Only to return to midi 9-1 after that..  :) is maybe a stupid request but a good one for my mental obsession haha :).

Just a total track or chair count would be awesome if possible!  Thanks!

  • Actually I found the sextion sizes on the front page stating 8, 6, 6 and 4.  So in essence do you plan to do:

    1.  Violas - 6 solos, 3 groups of 2 chairs, 2 groups of 3 chairs and one total 6 chair.

    2.  Celli - Same as number 1.

    3.  Basses - 4 solo, 2 groups of 2 and 1 group of 4

Would this line up with your track/chair count plan by chance?

    Thanks!

  • The track count is up to you, since you can do as little as one track for all players in a section, or desks,  or up to as many as the number of players.   That is the whole idea of Dimension Strings.   So you could have 8 tracks for violins, 6 for celli, etc. or fewer.

However, I really like having them all on separate tracks, because that gives you the opportunity to mess with each player in the sequencer as well as humanize functions.  But that does result in a large addition of tracks to your orchestration as well as memory/CPU demands.  But it is something that is worth dealing with because the Dimension Strings for the first time in sampling actually provide you with the same thing you have in a real orchestra - each player separately playing, but also blending with the others.

  • Exactly William.  That is why I have such a large track count :).  I love working that way.  I consider each chair they give us it's own track.  It has given me unreal power with these strings.  The large chair groups are nice for fast demo's, but I never use them for my finished work.  But I certainly would consider using them as a "layer" to something else at times.  That's why I was hoping to at least hear a certified "chair count" so that I can make my tracks to accomodate all those chairs :).  These are my favorite strings of VSL for sure now!  The more I learn on them the more impressed I am!

  • I realized you were thinking about the 2 player desks, 4 player, etc. as opposed to the solo players.

Maybe you already know and I misinterpreted what you were saying, but those are not actually separately recorded samples.  For example, the 2 player desk is simply two of the solos put together in a preset with some humanizing and a MIR profile, etc.   But it is not a separate set of samples.  So you wouldn't want to use the two player desk with the same two solo players.   And all that means the actual chair count is the number of solo players that are listed -  8,6,6,4.

I agree on the amazing quality and complexity these strings are creating.  It is mind-boggling!  I now feel that whatever it takes to keep up with these samples in CPU/memory is worth it.
