  • another Vienna/Sibelius problem -- and advice on upgrading to Vienna Instruments 5

It's not that unusual for me to have problems with the wrong instrument playing if I'm trying to set up a new template in Sibelius, usually simple user error. But now I'm stuck. My horns play as trumpets as well as the trumpets. In Sibelius playback devices, everything looks fine and the horn sound test is a horn. In the Edit Instruments the default sound is unchanged at Horn. It is correct in Vienna Ensemble also. But go to the dreaded Sibelius mixer and under channel 9 and 10 you get the following description "brass.horns.french.horn -Trumpet" as can be seen from the screenshot below. I have no idea where this comes from?

Perhaps this query should go to Sibelius but I notice that I can get quick and accurate answers here. Anyway I'd also like to ask a quick bit of advice. Currently using Vienna Ensemble v2. Is it advisable to update to Vienna Instruments v.5 and, most importantly, will existing Sibelius scores be able to deal with this without major reprogramming (as far as I can remember the update from VE1 to 2 was troublefree but this could be a more drastic step)

    Many thanks,

    David

  • doesn't looks as if the screenshots have appeared -- maybe too large?

Anyway, apologies -- I forgot to add one important piece of info. I have checked and this definitely only appears using the VSL SE sounset which I'm now using to get my trills following Andi's advice earlier. With the VSL SE +, instruments are OK (except no woodwind trills which is why i changed in the first place!). I did check the soundset itself but no sign of any accidental editing in the Programs tab there. So the change of soundset is the only change made.

  • Hello David!

Please notice that playing around in the Sibelius mixer with the output, channel or Sound ID settings can mess up your playback. If you have tried to make settings there, please reset all outputs to (Auto).

I recommend updating to the latest version of Vienna Instruments. Your old Playback Configurations should also work the same way after updating.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Andi --- I've upgraded to v5 VI and everything seems fine, except the original problem is still there unfortunately! I can speculate more or less what happens when you use the plus soundset as probably the trill entry in the dictionary looks for the trill in the soundset which tells it to play an articulation which doesn't exists in the woodwind and tries to substitute. The lack of consistency over what exactly happens (eg, it may play staccato or sost. but never the desired trill) mean there must be  a clash somewhere that I can't find.

The mixer I never try to use for adjustments and always click "auto" after I've had a look at it for any reason

But I still have no explanation of why in the standard soundset, horns play as trumpets and in the plus version, everything is correct except for some articulations such as woodwind trills -the original problem. Surely the only thing that a soundset alone can influence is possibly articulation mapping and not this erroneous instrument mapping. This is the only thing that has changed!

To be honest, I had considered upgrading to the full SE vol1 + as it is now called but have been rather put off by the cost. Thought the promised discount might sway me but there doesn't actually seem there is any. Brass and woodwind both cost €115 each, the special discount price for upgrading for myself who has already bought the strings + is €230 so no saving at all. What am I missing here? (if this should go to sales, pls tell me and I can redirect this query)

    many thanks, David

  • Hello David!

Your problem sounds like there is some error in your Playback Configuration. Please check again the following settings:
    - Did you reserve a program/channel for every instrument of your score on the Sibelius/Manual Sound Sets page? If one instrument occurs multiple times in your score, you will also need multiple channels for it.
    - Please make sure to make settings on the Manual Sound Set page for every Vienna Ensemble instance.
    - Do you have the same channels in Vienna Ensemble and Sibelius?

In addition I recommend using the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style for Sibelius, which can be downloaded here:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/en/68/141/460/576/655.htm

If this doesn't help, you can send me your score and Playback Configuration (mxl file and data folder) to support [at] vsl [dot] co [dot] at  and I will take a look at it.

It depends on your system and Sibelius version where Playback Configurations are stored.

    Windows XP:
    Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\Playback Configurations
    or
    Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Avid\Sibelius 7\Playback Configurations

    Mac OS X:
    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6/Playback Configurations
    or
    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7/Playback Configurations

Under Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8 the Users/your username/Library folder is hidden by default. To get
access go to the folder Users/your username. Then choose Go/Go to folder and enter “Library”.

We have discounts for upgrading from our Special Edition volumes to our Single instruments and to our instrument collections. This way you don't have to pay for samples twice that you have already got. If you buy an additional Special Edition or Special Edition PLUS section, you get all new content. So there is no discount for that.

    Best,
    Andi
