  • Dimension Strings: Some Questions re. the Patch Overview Video

    Hi

Just bought Dimension Strings, and am trying to incorporate it into my template.

The way the library is structured (as 8 separate players) makes this a little more challenging than with other libraries, so I wondered if I could ask what the conventional wisdom is, with reference to the way it's demonstrated in the patch overview video.

First question: I notice that in the library, there are patches for all the players individually (ie. 8), for separate desks (ie. 4) and for the full section.  In the patch overview video it appears that each player is loaded individually into its own instance of VI Pro, on a separate MIDI channel.  Most of the demonstration pieces appear to play the section in two parts (4 players + 4 players).   How is this being done - can the library be played like this live, or would each player's part have to be recorded separately?  Are the relatively simple video demos being played, or have they been recorded?  I'm struggling to see how this kind of live Divisi playing is possible, and would really like to be enlightened.

Also, in the video expression and slot xfade controllers are being used whilst the demos play.   How is it intended that the composer should assign controllers to do this, if the players are all on different MIDI channels, and some of them are playing different parts, but all are responding to the same expression and cell xfade controls?   How is it being done in the video?

I'd be really grateful for some input on how these fairly basic funcions are designed to work, and how they were implemented in the demo video, and how the developers intended that the library should be configured for the kind of usage which is demonstrated in the video.  At the moment, I can only envisage some nightmarishly complex controller assignments, or duplicating many many parts and being able to play nothing 'live', so I want to get this right whilst I'm setting the template up.  No doubt I'm missing something.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Same system. One by one, if you like. Record-enable multiple players if you like. You can edit the MIDI data separately anyway, for each player.

    Does that help?

  • Hi Paul

Many thanks for your extremely helpful response.

If I understand things correctly then, Herb record-armed only the tracks for those players he wanted to record in his host (e.g players 1 through 4), and then recorded controller info as he played or separately afterwards.  I presume this is what you mean by 'record enabling' the individual players - this i done in the host.   I suppose if one then wanted to create a uniform controller peformance for the whole section, one would record arm all tracks, and then record the controllers as a separate pass.

I gues it's just a question of getting used to thinking of the section as 8 separate parts rather than one whole, and then trying not to let the host session get unmanageably complicated!

    Thansk again for your help.
