  • Sibelius and VI drum sounds - effect playing by a (hidden) key?

Hallo! If this question was already asked i d be thanksful for the link, too! For my question I m using Sibelius (7) with VI, (old) Special Edition with the cymbals and gongs matrix. now i e.g. like to use the sample assigned at key B''' (sounds like scratching the TamTam). What i have to do, to give Sibelius the right sign, to use this sample, when I ve a 1 or 5 line drum system. And (not so important question) why i cant play with the whole keyboard, when drum system is selected. I know that they are different tutorials how to use house style and so on. But its very confusing and i dont see the final advise how i get my special "key" as mention above. Or where i can get a list with the signwords for siblius that gives it the order to play "scratch tamtam" I would be very very happy to get a helping advise! i m not a beginner, but here i obviously fail to see the solution. thanks in advance! PS: i m not looking for the following: openening a normal voice intrument in sibelius, adding cymbal matrix and writing the B''' into the score. I need a good looking, sorted score (best case: one drum line with effekt/instrument definition by a word (or hidden midi-control advise to sibelius) without an extra, hidden ossia line to make it audible. if possible??

  • Is it not possible?

  • Hello invisble1968!

Sorry, your initial message slipped through my radar somehow. ;-)
In order to trigger the Tam-tam scratches, you can use the Technique Text command "scrape" on a Tam-tam staff. Please notice that the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style has to be loaded for that.

If you want to use a 5-line-percussion system you can trigger samples by notating the pitch they are mapped to. How to do that is explained in the "Optimzing Sibelius Playback" manual, page 8. This manual can be downloaded here:

  • hi Andi! thanks a lot! thats brings already some light in it! is there an extended list for percussion (As for strings etc) commands connected to the samples, vienna but into the package? than i think i would be close to complete happiness ;)

  • PS "scrape" works fantastic! to get the rest for the first (as far there is no dictionary for all the words, vienna implemented in the sibelius-playback-dictionary?), i ve found the possibility to assign each sample to one position/kind of notehead in the 5-line-drum-system. Thats actually the better solution. but in case you dont want to create a drum-set every new performance situation, it still would be great to have a list of playtechnique words. but i repeat myself :)

  • Hi invisible1968!

A list of commands is included in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, but I must admit that the "scrape" command was left out.

  • hi! yes, "The list of all included instruments and articulations is too long to be covered here, as this is the most complex sound set of all. You will find it included with the sound set as a separate manual." can i find a list for the percussion in the old ""special edition"? perhaps i m the only who thinks he need this, but for me it would facilitates the work to have a list like: --- Preset "percussion" or "stings" etc: key-samplename-short explanation C1# | xxxx | xx xxx xx --- but for now, my last question: i slowly get convienced by the 5-line-drum-self-defined sample method (e.g. f'=base drum, a'=cymbal). but i ve a problem with non-pitching staff: sibelius doesnt give midi messages to VI-plugin except the key, i defined in the 5-line-drum-instrument when i m using non-pitched-staff. that means, i obviously cant change the matrix by keyswitch in a non-pitched staff. how do i give VI a sign to change the matrix anyway? (normally i do it with hidden appoggiatura) and apparently, my VI doesnt choose the right sounds by itself. (i "installed" house style and sound set. and inside a matrix he's doing a perfect job) problem with pitched-staff: crazy scattered notes in the staff. is it possible to combine working pitch-staff and the better looking, but not-complete-working non-pitch staff?

  • omg! i ve found the solution!! Keyswitch by controlchange (as for flageoletts): ON ~Nxx,64 OFF ~Oxx,64 >>> these messages are send in pitched and nonpitched staff! so, i m looking forward to the day VSL publish a table of commands. but for now i m happy! thanks for your replies and inspiration!

  • What you have quoted is the list of instruments and articulations of the "Percussion" collection. As you have only registered the Special Edition, this list would not be of much use for you. As written earlier the list of Technique Text commands for the Special Edition is already included in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual. Just be aware that for the Percussion instruments you will need the specific Sibelius instrument loaded. (Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Triangle, Tam-tam, Cymbals, ...)

If you are looking for mapping details of the Percussion patches, you can find these in the Special Edition manual, which can be downloaded here:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/en/68/2219/2231/1904.htm

Changing between matrices with keyswitches in the syntax "~Nxx,64" is of course possible. I agree that this makes sense if you work with the 5-lines-Percussion system and trigger notes by pitch.

    Best,
    Andi
