  • Solo strings staccato vs perf repetition staccato

Hi all! I'm trying to setup my template for solo strings and I was wondering if I'm supposed to use both the normal staccato from the short and long notes and the performance repetition staccato. The normal staccato has 4 vel layers and the perf rep staccato has 3 vel layers. Also the sound of theses patches is completely different. It seems like the normal staccato is much better than the perf rep one. Though I always thought that the performance patches are always better. Can somebody give some light to this subject?

  • By definition repetition sample should be used for repetitions. Are you trying to use them for something else?

  • Thanks for your reply. Actually yes, I thought I can use the performance repetition as a normal staccato. But now I understand this is wrong. So I guess you use both staccatos, right? And does the same apply to all other articulations like sustain, detache, legato etc? thanks

  • You can use it for whatever you like, but just bear in mind that it is designed to be used as a repetition, so may not work for other purposes. I use whatever sounds best for that moment.

  •  When you say the normal staccato sounds better to you, it'd be interesting for you to analyze the reason for that perception.

A suggestion- if you follow the logic suggested by Daryl above, you'd probably come to the conclusion that you maybe able to automate the playing of these different intervals depending on the type of line you're performing. A longer note repetition would not sound the same as a shorter repetition... the normal staccatos maybe better suited for a certain type of note, the perf rep ones for another... hope this helps.

  • I guess you are right. Both patches are needed according to the situation. When I said that the normal staccato sounds better to me I was referring to the recording quality-technique. If you AB the same notes from the two different patches you will notice that the normal staccato is recorded more "forward" vs the perf rip staccato that is recorded less "forward" and it has a bit of the ambience within it. Now could I ask you, which articulations would you include in a violin template so that you don't blow up your ram but you have a workable all round violin template to use for your composition? Thank you.

I can understand where your comming from on this. If you are sampling a library you are going to make a fair number of recordings and cherry pick the best and most solid ones from these for each articulation. However with the repetition performances these may be just a  single set of repetitions or an edited compilation of repetitions with the source to final selection ratio being diminished somewhat.

As a result of this within some of the repetion samples there are some weaker individual notes - to an extent that in some cases it may be best to consider an alternative - but the repetition articulations could be considered to be recreating what would happen in a live performance.

So the non-repetition samples may sound more polished but for a repetitive sequence  the repetition samples will generally sound more realistic - which is pretty much what DG was saying!

  • Yes you are right. This is also what I think. Well, I'm very satisfied with the overall sound of Vsl so there is nothing to complain about. Though I'm going to start a new thread about the template for composing. Thanks
