  • A question on polyphonic VDB

    Hi,

I just installed Vienna Dimension Brass which after a couple of hours is already very exciting. There's something I don't understand, though, concerning the best use of polyphony.

I am using the "compact" VI Pro matrices, switching articulations horizontally and selecting the player configuration vertically (4, 3, 2a, 2b or 1). Now, the manual says this:

Due to their nature, all interval performances are monophonic; otherwise, the software would have to be able to decide which source note belongs to which target note. To circumvent this, you can open two VI instances of the same instrument on separate MIDI tracks without any additional strain on your RAM. Note: the Vienna Instruments PRO player software also allows you to play polyphonic Interval performances.

Which a little mystifying. How can you "open two instances of the same instrument on separate MIDI tracks"? You either send several MIDI tracks to the *same* instrument, or add a second instrument instance which eats up RAM. I don't understand what the manual is trying to tell me...

What is the best way to have "proper" monophonic legato transitions *and* still be able to play polyphonic lines using different players?

    Thanks.

    Hello Talino,

You already registered VI PRO, so you can actually play polyphonic lines with any performance legato instrument.

What exactly doesn´t work as you expect it to work?

Here is a link to the Dimension Brass Video, in case you have not seen it yet.

  • I don't understand, if I set VIP's interval mode to "Poly", how to I play "real" monophonic legato lines, such as those that would be played by a single player? As soon as keys overlap I get multiple voices. I've read the VIP manual but couldn't find a clear explanation.

  • Hello Talino,

If you keep the overlap short, there is no difference. But there is no other way to introduce polyphonic legato, if notes cannot overlap (=sound at the same time). Give it a try.

  • I understand, I was used to overlapping and it keeps my MIDI data interchangeable with LASS which is practical when writing counterpoint quickly. I was simply wondering what the benefits of Poly mode were, and I guess I'll stick with Mono. In the meantime I've just dispatched Players 1, 2, 3 & 4 on one VIP instance each, for a total of 16 MIDI tracks, and everything's fine now. The funky player-switching matrices are nice for demos, but separate control is still the way to go for me (and I can still do any divisi combination I like...) I guess you've hit the sweet spot with that library :)

    Hi Talino,

If you like this approach for Brass, you will love Dimension STRINGS.

  • I've seen the demos already, but currently LASS cares for my string needs. As much as I would have liked buying the entire VSL, I'm on a budget, and I also like to try getting the most out of what I have before trying something else. I actually enjoy struggling with the Special Edition flute :) I invest in sections, one paid score at a time...

However, a Dimension Woodwinds this year would be a no-brainer for me. I presume that if I asked whether it was worth waiting or to go instead with Berlin Woodwinds, I wouldn't get much of an answer... :)

  • Hi,

Dimension Woodwinds is not very high on our to-do list, to be honest. Our woodwind sections are rather small and there are second instruments available for most woodwind instruments. In combination with VI PRO, that´s a lot of material to get some variation in the woodwinds sections.

Right now our next goal is very clear: To get the rest of the Dimension Strings out there as quick as possible [:)]

  • OK thanks a lot for the straight answer... and good luck with the strings output. Perhaps I'll change my mind when you post some full strings pieces next year :)
