  • Apple DLSMusicDevice crashes VE Pro Server

Instantiating an Apple DLSMusicDevice into VE Pro Server causes it to crash eventually.  It will crash if you try to delete the DLSMusicDevice or if you quit VE Pro after having used it at least once and relaunching VE Pro Server.  Happens with both VE Pro Server and VE Pro Server 64.  I can send crash logs if you can't reproduce on your end.

I am running OS X 10.8.2 and VE Pro Server 5.1.11548

For what it's worth, it does seem to work if you just build a new instance and insert the DLSMusicDevice and then never quit or try to delete it. But of course this is not too useful except for just trying out things.

  • Also crashes VE Pro standalone.  Just add a DLS device and then try to delete it.  Or just add a DLS device and then quit VE Pro.  Crashes every time.

  • Looks like a new bug in Mountain Lion. It works without issues in Lion here at least.

  • I am able to get it to work with 10.6.8 on another machine.  So I am inclined to agree with you.  By the way, the same problem occurs with Logic in 10.8.2.

  • If it also crashes in Logic, you can safely assume that it is a bug in the DLSMusicDevice coming with Mountain Lion.

  • Maybe.  But it doesn't crash some other hosts (e.g., GarageBand or Sibelius).  So I can't really say for certain what the problem is.

It seems like you want to make sure VE Pro doesn't crash for whatever reason.  As it is now, one can add a DLS device but not ever delete it.  It requires rebuilding the entire ensemble from scratch.  Plus it's hard to track down if you don't know about this bug.

  • We certainly appreciate you taking the trouble to report a bug (of which I indeed wasn't aware). But seeing as it's a bug in the DLSMusicDevice coming with Mountain Lion, all I can do at this point is tell you not to use it until Apple fixes it (which may take a while as it's probably not their top priority). I'd stay clear of the generic Apple AUs in general. It's not the first time they've caused issues.

  • That's fine.  I'll avoid using it.  But it occurs to me that Apple may not consider this a bug since not all hosts crash.  So there is apparently a proper way to use this plugin and an improper way to use it.  Or you could be right and it's a bug in the plugin.  Regardless, it might make sense to discuss this issue with Apple and see what the problem really is.
