  • Advice needed

Hi folks, I have been using VSL Special Edition Volumes 1 and 2 (not the Plus versions) for several years and love it, but I need more!  What would you recommend?

I love the chamber strings, and the regular orchestral instruments, but I find I need more articulations.  Even more importantly I need more velocity layers.  Working with instruments like the trumpet, I find the jump between soft and louder legato playing (according to velocity) is much too drastic.  Would I find a huge leap in velocity layers if I were to go to the specific instrument collections?  Are there some libraries that work better with the Special edition?  Any people out there that have been upgrading their SE with Instrument Collections with great success?

    Thanks for any advice!

  • First things first, if you are finding a huge leap between legato layers, just check that you're using velocity xFade.

  • Thanks for the quick reply DG, I don't think I'm understanding Velocity xFade properly, if I activate the Velocity XFade switch under Perform control, I lose Velocity control of levels, is there some other way to use velocity xFade?

I did just try switching to manual control of velocity xfade, but there is too much phasing happening between the two layers (as opposed to expression)

    Thanks again for any help!

    Hi Blueshift,

Did you check out our VIDEO TUTORIALS yet? 😊

In a nutshell: If you right-click on the Velocity Xfade Slider, you can assign any control you like.

Alternatively, you can also choose from a list of possible controllers in the Basic View => Realtime Controller Area!

    Best,

  • Hi guys, the video is helpful indeed! [:$] Especially getting to the bottom of what DG was referring to, as I am on the old version of Vienna Instruments (I didn't see the on/ off switch, just the tab to select it).  Anyhow, I can see the use of velocity xFade vs expression control, and I'll be exploring that further, I've always let Velocity itself control which sample was being played and used expression to make it dynamic.

Back to the other question, I'm convinced by watching the demos that I need to invest in Instrument packages to get the full benefit of VSL!

    Hi Blueshift,

Sounds good. You´ll like Velocity Xfade a lot!

Hm, regarding upgrades: The first thing I´d get is probably Vienna Instruments PRO, as it helps you to get so much more out of the collections you already have.

It´s a new interface, but the Video Tutorials will also help a lot! Give it a try with a free demo license, available on the product page (click "try").

Then you should check out the new volumes of the Special Editions. We have added more instruments in Volumes 3&4!

If you already know which instruments of the Special Editions you really like => check out the bigger Instruments Collections or the Single Instruments to upgrade. Always a tough decision, I know [;)]

    Best,

    Paul
