  • Best NIC's for low latency?

Hey all- Running two 3930k hackies here and looking to figure out the best interfaces for low latency...I have a pair of older 10gbe cards that offer very high overall bandwidth, but do have some occasional dropouts with pt @128 and VE set to "2". I haven't been able to get my internal cards to set the IP. I was wondering if anyone had tried FW800? I know that it's got the lowest bandwidth of all the options, but it seems FW is usually pretty good for low latency audio and video compared to network in general. Wondering if people are running 128 in PT with VE at 2 or lower? And if so what network interfaces? Thanks

  • Ryan,

I think you're asking if you might use FireWire 800, in lieu of Ethernet, for Vienna Ensemble network purposes.

Unless somethings changed, the answer is no.

  • It is a bit strange, but setting PT to 128 actually means it will process the plugins with a 64 sample buffer. I would recommend at least 256 latency for ProTools, with 2-4x buffer.

  • Thanks- I wish Vienna would work with a NIC company to make a specific low latency nic like the rednet card. I would buy them, it seems that with a good audio interface vienna can play a lot of voices at a low latency without glitches, I wish I could get that exact performance through the network. Are there any NICs that are better than others? I would be a happy camper if I could just leave PT set to 128 all the time. Thanks

  • We haven't done any extensive tests of network cards. Most are happy with whatever comes on their motherboard.

For PT, as I stated earlier, please up the number of buffers for low latencies. 2 buffers setting for ProTools at 128 samples latency, is a very low and heavy load, since PT will process 2x64 samples buffer during one cycle. Please go to 4 buffers, or raise your buffer size.
