  • Chamber as 2nd Violins

Does anyone ever use Orchestral violins for 1st violins and Chamber violins for 2nd violins? I am trying this on a pop-country song with 1st violins, violas, and celli from Orch and 2nd violins from Chamber. OK so far although I find the legato responding a bit differently in Chamber.

  • You can do this, and in some ways it can be very good because it gives you a different timbre among the violins as a whole.   Though what I have done very often is Appassionata on 1st, and Orchestral on 2nd.  This enriches the timbre overall.   However, one thing to watch out for is that sometimes adding a smaller ensemble can make the entire ensemble sound smaller.   In that case, I have simply used a transposed/pitch-shifted 2nd violin group made up of the same instruments as the first.  It depends on the music though, as sometimes the different ensembles work very well and add some complexity to your mix.
